Oh, now really...

Sky News (the lightweight little brother of the BBC) aired a story about how video footage of John McCain's captivity shows him smoking a cigarette. They speculate that this might "undermine his heroism."

I'm not sure whether they mean that it shows him having some sort of comfort or luxury while in captivity, or whether they believe people might disapprove of the bad example that smoking would set for innocent young viewers, but for God's sake.

I don't think there's ever been a regime cruel enough to deny their prisoners cigarettes. And furthermore, I have never been a smoker but if I were held captive in the jungle by the Viet Cong, I'd be lighting up, too.

I loved one of the comments I saw on the story. Someone said, "McCain's hair is mussed also.  What message does that give about good grooming?  Think of the children."

Although I fear a John McCain presidency, I still consider him a courageous man who served his country in horrific circumstances. Besides, talk about kicking a guy when he's down. His own staffers are talking about his campaign in the past tense these days.
