No, Sherelle. I don't think you're wrong. I think there are a lot of people for whom a severe mental breakdown happens. Where depression/other disorder goes way out of hand and there's nothing that can be done. But you're right, too many people make excuses, and too many people use this as a way to make those excuses when they have no fucking idea what it's like to be really despondent and really mentally sick

it's hard to deal with mothers like that, it really is. i did a lot of my own raising, because i had a fascist step father and a mother who lost her mind for a good number of years. when it looked like she could get her mind back, she lost it for another reason and it took therapy and medication to get her functional. this is after she didn't eat or get out of bed for three months, and couldn't hold a job for close to a year, much less make dinner or grocery shop. i understand where he's coming from, but then again i don't. it was, for a long time, my mom and me, and i was her biggest critic. i still have a hard time dealing with her when she gets depressed, and i still have a lot to confront over how i had to grow up because she was depressed and nonfunctional. there's nothing wrong with expecting more from a grown woman, i promise.
