The tour, sadly, was full the moment I rounded the stairs to the register. Sigh. But they let me taste the 10-year (had had it before) and I got a wee nip of the 18 year Talisker. They don't export hardly any of that. It was like they kicked up the 10-year a notch in the sweet-carmelly department and just slightly smoothed out the harshness. I quite liked it!
We went to one pub on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh that had over 150 single malts by the glass. The Albanach. Soooo fun. I *almost* got to try a 30-year Balvenie (that's my favorite distillery so far), but they didn't have enough to sell a glass and they've strict liquer-selling laws there. Each time I ordered Scotch, they measured it in a government-issued stainless steel measuring device.
Oh! And ... there's a whisky shop there that was amazing, too. Any shop pretty much lets you try some whisky while you're shopping. Ingenious, really, you get to try the product AND if you're a bit buzzed, I bet you buy more ;) The shop - Royal Mile Whisky (http://www.royalmilewhisky.com/) claims they ship to the states, too. They sell stuff that isn't exported to the US. If you're ever interested in trying to combine an order, I know a few people who might go in on it, too.
And while we're on that subject, I've a bottle of Blair Athol (highland scotch geographically near Dalwhinie but flavored near a speyside more than a highland) that isn't exported at home that I'll have to give you a wee dram of at next MES. :D
Yeah, I already had the TALISKER 20cl Gift Pack up in another window when I got this -- posting the first link was all the enabling you needed to get things started. ;)
Highly recommend the 18-year Talisker ... it was *very* nice. If I didn't have 2 3/4 bottles at my house already, I'd go in on the order with you for a bottle or two ;)
