Day 10

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (More than one is okay, too.) Tell us about it, tell us why you love it, give us some examples and recs. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Still playing catch up. Wish I could create a fanwork for Day 7 but I have no imagination right now. Too much of an introvert for Day 8; and I've been leaving FB on AO3 all during break on stuff I found there that delighted me (tryfanstone wrote Joe Simpson fanfic!). But a cliche, a trope, a kink, a motif... sure!

AUs and crossovers. I love AUs and crossovers and, specifically, I love dense plotty AUs and crossovers, It's so much fun to write these, and so much fun to read them: they're even more of a puzzle for me than straight ahead fanfiction, because I'm trying to find resonances when I write, and I'm looking for canonical resonances when I read. When you find them, it's an Easter egg! There's a great Teen Wolf AU where Stiles is researching supernatural creatures and stumbles across Derek on Craigslist while he's looking for a vampire, and has no idea he's a werewolf (For Science!). Uh, I love C6D where Paul Gross characters end up with Callum Keith Rennie characters. It's great to see those twists and turns. And due South AUs. I'm thinking of Kellie's Somewhere Else to Be, which was a great AU that was poignant and heartfelt. Then there's an M7/SGA crossover a lot of people haven't come across by Zorrorojo that I could read over and over until I'm blue in the face and I've never even seen SGA: One Day Out West. Her series has - almost literally - everything. And I've previously discussed Sineala's Chosen Man (The Eagle AU) but she's even more recently written a fantastic Marvel/Star Trek fusion for the Cap-Iron Man Big Bang, Straight on till Morning. I cried. I did.

I also love missing scenes, "what happened when" or "what happened after." I think I like these because I like fandom, subtext, and fanfic so much. That's how I interact with media now: what happened when, why did it happen, how'd that fit into this read of the character... I guess it comes to its logical conclusion with AUs and crossovers (see above), when I think about it, because then you're extrapolating these hypotheses into other settings/universes, and putting the puzzles together in new ways. There's an especially amazing story by Carmarthen, Traitor or True, that addresses a very difficult part  of The Eagle. Pay heed to the warnings, however; and don't read it if you haven't seen the film. And speaking of heartfelt, and Kellie, I also like dS happy-ever-afters, like her Unforeseen. <3
