Carroll hadn't actually thought of any answer when he first wrote it. Various answers were proposed, and Carroll received enough mail asking about it that he came up with one himself. Carroll's answer was, "like a raven, the writing desk produces a large quantity of notes, all very flat, and is nevar (sic) put back to front." Some clever typesetter, however, went and corrected the "nevar" and spoiled the joke.

"Poe wrote on both" is another famous answer, of course.

But my favourite has always been "because there is a B in Both."

Please see miseri's comment. It just goes to show that people had WAAAAAAYY too much time on their hands even in the late 1800's
