i've been working too many hours lately. i'm really burned out. i'm taking a few days off to settle down. it coincides with other things i want to do, and i want to make sure i have the time and energy to attend.

i don't know, should i write about things that are going to happen or wait until they've already happened?

last night i went to the international festival of authors.

david thewlis wrote a book and as one review points out, it's actually good. no, i didn't hump his leg as soon as i spotted him. in fact i almost gobbed on his limo as it pulled up because it totally cut me off. i had been riding my bike behind it for a few blocks down the street and it kept stopping at every building, unsure where it was going. i kept circling around it, then it would catch up and cut me off again and again.

i was quite disappointed with his film cheeky where he looked quite fat and old. and the film kinda sucked. it hasn't been shown anywhere since its debut at the film festival four years ago. but he looks better now. the above photo is about twelve years old but they're using it in the program's bio blurb. i got in for free with my secretly-expired student I.D. from nine years ago. i've aged more in my decade-old photo than david. sad, really.

watching him read, you can easily see how much of his mannerisms and rambling used in his johnny character from naked are actually genuinely his. his right hand does this dismissive wave-thing constantly, and he's always fishing something out of his jacket pocket but never actually pulls anything out. i had the urge to do something distracting to catch his attention, just so he'd accidentally quote a line from naked, like "WILL YOU STOP FOKKING ABOUT IN MY PERIPHERALS, I'M TRYING TO CONCENTRATE!". he uses "fokking" in every other sentence.

the other authors reading that evening were also good. i was disappointed when i saw bret easton ellis a couple years back. he walked up to the stage, read for ten minutes, and then that was it. there was some other author before him that i didn't care for. i paid $10 for that? but this evening was great, the other authors were Michael Winter, Jay MillAr, Jakob Arjouni and Gil Adamson. the whole thing was about an hour and a bit, and it totally screwed my plans to see nightmare detective on the other side of town at 9:30.

i was too tired to stick around and line up to talk to him afterwards, but i will buy his book. he's back again tonight to do an interview along with will self. haven't gotten around to reading his books just yet.

there's also a jesu concert tonight and a few other things this weekend. the weekend films are
zones, anguish and alpine fire. canzine fest is this sunday, i made no effort to get anything ready. i might show up and try to get a merch table and sell off the remainder of my cds. i should have put more effort into it this year. i said that last year and the year before that.

i'm not used to writing in here anymore. but it's better than, you know, that other alleged online community. i'll still be around here.
