“Good day, class,” Alecto addressed the teenagers that sat before her. The students in her class were silent in contrast to how they might have been when she had first taken over the course. But several weeks ( Read more... )

Blue eyes flickered about his classmates for a moment before Theodore raised his hand, a slight frown on his face. He recognized a good deal of the spells, though one stood out sharply in his mind, making him cringe at the mere thought.

Alecto was immediately pleased when she saw Theodore raise his hand. "Why does it not surprise me that Mr. Nott here might have the answer?" She nodded at him to speak.

"Flagello, it's a...lashing curse," Theodore answered, scars on his back flaring up in phantom pain. His discomfort with the subject could only be noted by the slight hesitance in his voice, but he rarely spoke out in class, and as such it would not be noticeable to most.

"Ah, yes. Flagello is a favorite curse amongst people who enjoy self punishment. But it can be even more enjoyable in the form of a hex, used on others. Five points to Slytherin for being able to understand Latin."

Yes, she was very pleased. The first person to answer correctly was a pureblood, which reaffirmed her deeply held beliefs.

"Does anyone else have any clue about the spells I've written on the board?"

Michael hated Alecto- but she wasn't even going to vaguely realize that. His mask of neutrality was in full force these days, and as his public persona demanded he answer- "Knowledge is simply knowledge. Only execution of such knowledge is moral or immoral." Generally, he vomited up the words because he couldn't stomach what the woman was teaching.

Unfortunately, Michael also knew the answers. "Professor..." Michael said with a raise of his hand.

Alecto turned to Michael, lowering her nose down at him as she spoke. "Mr. Corner. I suppose you like a stab at this?" she challenged. Alecto knew little of the boy except that he had just been cleared by the Ministry to be considered a Halfblood as opposed to a Mudblood. As if that tiny distinction made much of a difference.

"Go on."

Michael nodded, glancing at Megan neutrally. "Exuro Viscus is the entrail-expelling curse, Ma'am. Suffoco and Punctum are suffocation and piercing hexes, respectively." Grey eyes respectfully glanced up at the woman and then down at the paper, as he awaited to hear if he was correct so he could add it to his extensive notes. "And Miss Jones is missing the flesh burning hex, Professor." He looked up and offered a neutral smile.

Alecto paused for a moment, both surprised and annoyed by his answers. "You are correct," she finally replied, her words terse. "I suppose being a Ravenclaw, your natural desire for knowledge helps you overcome other obstacles."

Twirling her wand between her fingertips, she perused the room. "Well then. I suppose it is time for practicum. Pairs, everyone."

Michael said nothing in return, he simply duly noted his correctness with his notes. On the inside though, Alecto was twitching in a Crucio or spasming under Apophis Mens, under the watchful gaze of Michael's darker side. It had been very suppressed over the last month, but Michael always let it out in front. It would shock Carrow the spells Michael knew.

Michael in no way volunteered to pair up, he simply remained neutral and listless until he was paired up- likely with some sadistic Slytherin. It would make the practicum so much easier to tolerate, all things considered.

As his classmates reluctantly paired up Theodore looked about the room with a neutral expression. He wasn't a fan of practicum, preferring to work on his own, but Sturgis had stressed the importance of paying the utmost attention in Carrow's classes.

His gaze landed on Michael, who had made no move towards pairing up with anyone, and he cocked his head to the side in question, arching an eyebrow.

Michael briefly looked at Theodore- offered a strained smile- and then looked away. It was about all he offered Theodore these days, save for after his first hearing at the Ministry.

Theodore sighed, rising from his seat and approaching the Ravenclaw. "Parteners?" he asked in a plesant voice, "You'll get yourself in trouble if you keep pushing her," he added in a hushed voice.

"I'm not pushing her. I'm not interested in pushing her." Michael stated matter of factly. "I'd appreciate it if you didn't put ideas out there like that as well. Your neck isn't on the line and our professor has plenty of ideas anyhow," Michael said. He didn't snap- he didn't get mad. All he did was whisper very quietly and very calmly. His grey gaze fixated briefly on Theodore before Michael uncrossed his arms, "Partners."

The Slytherin gave the smallest of blinks at Michael's retort, giving a nod. It was true, Carrow seemed quite fond of him. But still, he didn't want Michael to disappear like the others.

He smiled softly, nodding and looking to Carrow, awaiting instruction.

Alecto approached the two boys. "Since this pair consists of today's scholars," she said this with both of a hint of pride and disdain, "I will give you freedom of choice in deciding which hex you will practice."

Michael looked dispassionately on at Carrow and then to Theodore with a friendly nod. "What say you, old mate?" He inquired, assuring that Carrow realized that Michael was tying himself to a Pureblood by virtue of friendship, but nothing further. "Which do we have to choose from, Professor?" Michael inquired innocently, "Those mentioned, or including past chapters?"
