Ah, there was so much that was different, that was changed. The world around him, even the scent of it, was not what he remembered. And yet it felt so good to walk along the street as he was. He was free, free of the nothingness that had consumed him for more time than he knew. He knew time had passed, but only since his re-emergence did he realize just how much.
The last thing he remembered before the nothingness had been the mirror. The beautiful, grizzly death, and Ravenclaw's mirror which had been intended as his next horcrux. And then years and years of neverending nothingness, until he was suddenly yanked from his 'home'. For days, he had felt as if he were floating above the world until he had been drawn by the power of a spell.
The next thing he knew, he was standing over the dried husk of a man, feeling alive.
He reached into his pocket and fingered the wand he had acquired from the dead man's body. It felt good to be a wizard again, to use magic, even if the wand wasn't right.
However, he still needed food and lodging - an unfortunate necessity. He felt around in his pocket, mentally calculating how many galleons he had left. It had been amusing, seeing the look on the man's face when Tom had slid out his wand and cast a quick avada kedavra in the alley. Had he been alive, Tom was certain the man would have been amused by the stealing of his coin purse, as well.
He was in Hogsmeade now, and in the distance, he could see Hogwarts on its great cliff overlooking the lake. He needed to find a way back in. He needed the comfort of familiar walls and surroundings - but moreover, he needed access to things he'd left behind.
For now, he would settle for a meal at the Three Broomsticks, but soon, soon he would find his way into the castle, and Merlin help anyone who dared try to stop him.
