"You might not want to go in there," Jacob warns when you get out of the cruiser. The boy is fourteen now (how did that happen?); his voice has dropped but he's still short. At the moment -- sitting on the front steps of his porch, sharp elbows resting on knees, round chin resting on palm -- he looks younger than he is. "Dad's not in a good mood."

You hear a crash from inside the house. Billy's throwing stuff. "What happened?" you ask, appalled.

"Becca," is all Jacob says.

A surge of horror runs through you as you jog across the yard. For years the twins had talked about how they would take a trip to Hawaii right after graduating high school. Two months ago they'd shocked everyone by actually purchasing plane tickets; apparently they'd been saving every dime from every babysitting job, every dollar from every table waited at the diner, all to fulfill their dream of lying on white sand and soaking up the sun. Billy had grumbled about how they could've put all that money to better use than a ten day vacation, but you could tell he was kind of proud.

Had Rebecca been injured surfing? Drank too much and been hospitalized? You flash to the station wagon wrapped around the tree and your heart speeds up.

A vase barely misses your head when you open the door. "Billy! What the hell, man?"

"That stupid little girl!" Billy's face is flushed, his temper having gotten the better of him for the first time in God-knows-how-long. He's looking around for more things to throw but nothing's within arm's reach of his chair. "I raised her better than this! Sarah raised her better than this! Throwing away a free ride to college! Her whole goddamn future!"

Rachel's standing in the kitchen. She's looking at her shoes. "Where's Rebecca?" you ask.

"Still in Hawaii."

You can only think of one thing that would both stop the girl from leaving the state and make Reed pull her scholarship. "She got arrested."

"No." Rachel's voice is toneless, like something's been ripped out of her. "She got married."

Always had problems with this. Twilight kinda ruined my image "true, perfect love" for me, even in books (and then imagine I'm fan of HP where practically everything impossible is made possible). I can't imagine you'd throw college away -- then try to find something in between goddamnit instead of living on an island and just... Gah. Bella and Rebecca are a lot like each other, (I see them both as mother-like and caring, and throwing college away for their "true loves"...), no wonder I'm freaking out here about Becca.

Sorry for the rant. You know I love your writing.

Oh, yeah. While I've never thought too hard about Rebecca and her husband's relationship... canon-wise, the only thing that makes sense is a whirlwind romance. We know she'd just graduated from college and we know she moved to Hawaii and we know she'd given up a scholarship and no one liked that. The only thing that made sense was an elopement.

Frankly, I don't think any of the Black kids wound up overwhelmingly stable. I think they missed their mom and Billy never really managed to give them the centeredness they needed after that. I think Rebecca wanted to make her own family since hers didn't feel like one anymore.

That's a logical option... Though I still don't forgive Rebecca. Too stubborn for that. (Also, I'm pissed because I'm gonna miss watching Glee with my sister and stepmother tonight. Why couldn't my stepmother's birthday be tomorrow?! So I'm stubborn and pissed anyway. Sorry Beccs.)

I loved this addition. I love that you're developing not just Charlie, but the Black family through Charlie's eyes. You're awesome.

There would've been lots of Black family stuff, since I sort of subscribe to the belief that Charlie would've been the one making the trains run on time for awhile after Sarah's death. (Harry and Sue, too, but they had their own little kids to take care of.) Which naturally adds to Charlie's attachment to Jacob, which later when Bella stomps on him... though I expected to end the drabbles at Harry's death, so we wouldn't have to watch an excess of stomping.

I always thought Meyer missed the mark a bit here. Charlie knows Jacob better than he knows his own daughter; he's watched him grow up and been in his life so regularly... that whole escapade would have been complicated for him.
