OCtober 16 is the 200th birthday of Noah Webster, infamous dictionary man. There was an article in the paper today that said how he really pulled together American spelling (the article said language, but language knows no reins!). He was responsible for a lot of u-dropping from British English spelling and dropping the k in former "musick". Good for him, I say. English orthography has been outdated since the great vowel shift. He was fascinated by the multitudes of languages in this world, and a genuine intellectual it sounds like. I'm definitely getting a biography on this guy.
However, the paper did cite one disturbing thing from the original Webster's. His definition of preposterous: A Republican government in the hands of females is preposterous. Bad dictionary man! Very bad!!
