incomplete deadly sins

Not a contest entry, since I couldn't find songs for Gluttony or Envy (after doing two volumes already). But I'd already uploaded these, so enjoy. Shame, since some of them are very good.

1. Lust
Habanera, from Bizet's Carmen.

Carmen dances seductively as she sings this song about love.

"Love is a rebellious bird that none can catch,
and it's useless to call him if he feels like refusing...
Love is a gypsy child, he has never known law,
If you don't love me, I love you, and if I love you, watch out!"

Sung by Tatiana Troyanos.

2. Gluttony

Couldn't think of any more

3. Greed
All that Gold, from Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors.

The Mother, while everyone else is asleep, is tempted to take some of the Three Kings' gold to support herself and her crippled son.

"All that gold, all that gold,
I wonder if rich people know what to do with their gold...
They are asleep...Do I dare? If I take some they'll never miss it.
For my child, for my child..."

Sung by Lorna Haywood.

4. Sloth
Summertime, from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess.

Clara sings a lullaby to her baby.

"Summertime, and the livin' is easy,
Fish are jumpin', and the cotton is high,
Oh, your daddy's rich, and your ma is good looking,
So hush little baby, don't you cry."

Sung by Abbie Mitchell.

5. Wrath
Ha! Welch' ein Augenblick! from Beethoven's Fidelio.

Pizarro decides that he will finally kill Florestan, his enemy whom he has imprisoned and starved, so that Don Fernando, who is coming to inspect the prison, never knows.

"Ha! What a moment! I will cool my vengeance,
Your fate is calling you, dwell in its heart...
Now it's up to me to commit the murder myself,
In his last hour, with the steel in his wound, to cry in his ear: Triumph! Victory is mine!"

Sung by Ekkehard Wlaschiha.

6. Envy

Couldn't think of any more

7. Pride
Largo al factotum, from Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia.

Figaro sings about how he's the jack-of-all trades in Seville - everyone wants him, everyone needs him, everyone calls for him. I break here my rule of one song per opera because it's the quintessential song for this sin. I'd love to quote the entire thing, but here are four lines.

"Ah, good job, Figaro, good job, great job!
I'm really the luckiest, it's true...
A nobler, better life for a barber can't be found...
My, what mania! What a crowd! One at a time, for heaven's sake!"

Sung by Hermann Prey.

Carmen
Amahl
Porgy and Bess
Fidelio
Barbiere
