This time, electronica and industrial music.
Daddy?
Yes son
What does regret mean?
Well son, a funny thing about regret is that it is better to regret something you have done then to regret something you haven't. By the way... if you see your mom this weekend, be sure to tell her SATAN!
"Orbital, Satan, the industry standard mix"
I mostly blame
solipsistnation and
laereth, and to some extent
bouncingleaf for getting me into bands like Front 242, Orbital, and Pitchshifter. (
bouncingleaf is better known for showing me that there is good rap and hiphop in the world, just not the majority of what gets airplay).
Before having these friends dramatically influence my music tastes, I did listen to a bunch of 80's synthpop including Tears for Fears, Howard Jones, Thomas Dolby (and later Freezepop). But they are VERY different from groups like Orbital, mostly because they would occasionally use real instruments in their music, while Oribtal doesn't know how to play it if it doesn't have a MIDI port on it somewhere.
In college, my roommates Geo and
enrythe8th quite often had bands like Front 242 and 808 State playing in the background, but it wasn't till well after college that I actually bought my first 808 State album (Ex:el). It wasn't that I disliked them, I guess it was just more background music rather then something I actively listened to. If I was in their room, we were usually talking & drinking or doing homework... so the music was much more just being there rather then actively listened to. OK, there were the long nights of Wing Commander (and drinking), but we normally didn't have music on then. When we did, all I remember was Seal's first album on endless repeat and freshman (aka
jduprey) staring at the ceiling.
Listening to music like this makes me want to stop working for the day and run into the house and power up my full rack of synths and create more
Loser's music. Speaking of which... if I ever get off my butt, my sister and several others have encouraged me to create another Losers album. It is gaining on nearly 2 decades since the release of 'A Cultural Defect'. Most bands write music/lyrics before naming the song, let alone giving the album a title. Not The Losers! We're naming the album and song titles before anything is written. The working album title is 'Songs from the Washroom'. The first single will be 'All Washed Up'... a seemingly good title for a Loser's song.
Thanks for reading, and strolling down amnesia lane with me. Please note that no real instruments were harmed (or listened to) during the creation of this post.
