A/N: Inspiration for this fic came from the song
Moondance, specifically the August Rush movie version (which surprise, surprise! Alex was in!) I also just wanted a fic where Steve plays guitar!
In a way, he realises that he shouldn't have been so shocked by his discovery, and yet he still is.
"Steve? Ste-!" Danny yelled, entering Steve's house and searching for his partner, stopping when he heard the faint strands of a guitar being played. Curious, Danny followed the sound to the back door, seeing Steve's lone figure, sitting on the wooden deck chair, slightly hunched over an old guitar. It was late, the full moon out and reflecting against the calm ocean, providing enough light for Danny to see.
The detective paused in the doorway, leaning against the frame, simply listening to his partner play. He was amazed by the talent Steve had, the other man obviously having played for many years, and yet for some reason he had kept it a secret for so long.
"Babe?" Danny tried during a lull in the music.
Steve sprung up off his chair, gripping the guitar by the neck and whipping around in surprise. “Danno? How long have you been standing there for?" Steve asked, wide-eyed.
"Long enough," Danny admitted. "You're really good," he added, nodding his head towards the instrument, "how long have you been playing for? Why didn't you ever tell us you could play?" he asked, moving towards the free chair and taking a seat.
Steve sighed, sitting back down and resting the guitar against his lap, cradling it with as much care as a parent would their child, as he slowly started strumming. "I learnt when I was a kid... Mom taught me... Never did have much time to play once I moved to the mainland. I just found it again not too long ago up in the attic..." Steve explained. "I remember when Mom first wanted me to learn, Dad was against the idea, he didn't think it would be useful, but Mom didn't care, she loved music, wanted me to appreciate it as much as she did."
"Steve..."
"I still remember the first time Dad heard me play, once I was good, you know? The look of pride in his eyes, it was worth it, I would sit out here, play at night while Mom, Dad and Mary would dance in the sand. Mom's favourite song was Moondance, so I would play it over and over again..." he mumbled, closing his eyes and playing the first few chords.
"Well, it's a marvellous night for a moon-dance, with the stars up above in your eyes, a fantabulous night to make romance, 'neath the cover of October skies..." he sung, voice rough and soft but full of emotion. Danny was speechless, he was seeing a side to Steve, his fearless leader, that he had never seen before and one that he was sure Steve rarely let people (or himself) see.
"When it got real late, I would carry Mary up to her room and tuck her in to bed," Steve started talking again, fingers deftly continuing the song without pause, "Mom and Dad would stay out, and I could hear and see them from my room. Out in the moonlight, dancing as if they didn't have a care in the world. Laughing and so obviously in love, but that all changed after...” he coughed, “I would catch Dad staring out onto the beach when it was a full moon, I once tried to play but it just made things worse... Then we got shipped out," he sighed, the music stopping abruptly.
"Why did you bring it out tonight?" Danny asked, unsure of what else he could say.
"Today would have been their fortieth anniversary..." he answered, both men ignoring the waver in his voice or the fact that his eyes were shining brightly against the moonlight from the unshed tears.
"You know, Grace has been begging to learn an instrument, think you would want to teach her?"
"Really?"
"Yeah babe, she would love it," Danny nodded, his arm coming out towards Steve, hand facing up, waiting for the other man.
Steve quickly reached out and laced his fingers with Danny's, the meaning behind the offer understood and accepted.
