They had been trying for more than a year already. Jared flicked through his little book, dates and notes meticulously recorded, when they had tried to conceive, when Jared had bought pregnancy tests, when the tests came back negative. Each heart break was recorded in his simple black bound notebook. He started a new entry, pen shaking slightly as he wrote about buying another pregnancy test, this was their sixth try this year.

The doctor had said everything was fine, while there were still no guarantees, there didn’t seem to be any reason why Jared shouldn’t be able to conceive a child. And yet here they were, still trying. Tears ran down Jared’s face as he added to the notebook, praying that it wasn’t going to be another failed attempt, he still had three minutes to wait, three minutes until a little stick would tell him if he had a child or not.

Jared was so absorbed in writing in his notebook that he didn’t hear the front door open and close, didn’t hear the footsteps make their way through the house, didn’t even realise that the bedroom door had opened.

“Jay? Babe? What’s wrong?” Chris asked, seeing his partner’s hunched form and shaking shoulders.

Chris ran up to Jared, curling his arms around his boyfriend and pulling the younger man in close to him, his fingers raking through the long brown hair. He looked Jared over for any signs of injury or pain, and only then did he notice the black book in Jared’s hands.

“What’s that Jay?” Chris asked, pulling the book from Jared’s lax hands and flicking through the pages. It took Chris a moment, his eyes glossing over the tear stained pages, not really taking anything in, before he realised what he was looking at. “How long have you been keeping all these notes?” Chris asked, turning back to the first page just as Jared replied.

“Nearly a year and a half now...” he mumbled.

“You’ve been dealing with this all on your own? Why didn’t you tell me? You’re not alone in this, I’m here for you, I’m suffering with you Jay,” Chris whispered, pressing his nose to Jared’s temple before kissing the younger man, letting his silent tears run.

“It’s just... each time I see the negative sign on those tests... I feel like I’ve failed us ya know? I just wanna record it, maybe I can find out what I’m doing wrong or something...” Jared tried to explain.

“What brought this on all of a sudden? Why do you have it out now? When I’ve never seen you with this before?” Chris asked, just as an alarm went off.

“I took another test today...” Jared replied in a whisper.

Jared continued to sit there in Chris’ arms, not moving to the bathroom where the test was sitting, too scared to see the results. Chris’ heart was pounding, he knew just how much Jared had wanted a child, he wanted one just as bad, and yet he wasn’t sure if either one of them could handle another false alarm.

“Want me to go check?” Chris asked softly.

Jared hesitated a moment before nodding, his fingers uncurling from Chris’ arms and letting him go. Chris placed one more kiss to Jared’s temple before standing, “whatever happens Jay, we’ll be okay...” Chris commented, walking into the bathroom and picking up the small pregnancy test.

Jared closed his eyes and waited for the verdict, expecting another “I’m sorry”, all he heard was the faint clattering of a fallen object. “Chris?” Jared asked, not daring to open his eyes just yet.

Chris’ hands were shaking as he held the test in his hands, his mind trying to comprehend what he was seeing; a small, pink plus sign. It was positive? He let go of the pregnancy test, barely registering the sound of it hitting the floor as he rushed back to his lover’s side, he heard Jared’s whimper and plea for an answer, but he couldn’t do anything else but scoop Jared up into his arms and hold him close.

“Not again... no... no... not again, please, please not again!” Jared cried, thinking the worse as he clung to Chris.

“Shh, no Babe, not this time, it was positive!” Chris interrupted when he was finally able to form words again, hearing Jared’s broken plea.

“Wha-what?” Jared sobbed.

“It was positive!” Chris repeated, backing up slightly and cupping Jared’s face in the palm of his hand, “we’re gonna have a baby, we’re gonna be daddies!” he smiled through the tears, his thumbs caressing Jared’s cheeks to wipe at the tears falling from Jared’s eyes.

“We’re gonna be daddies?” Jared parroted, still in shock.

“Fill it in baby, the test was positive,” Chris said, picking up the black notebook and tapping his finger to the open page, his lips meeting Jared’s in a fiery kiss.

Jared’s whole face lit up, his smile brighter than anything Chris had seen before, he scrambled around for the pen he had dropped and, once found, he wrote, with careful strokes, how the test had come up positive. Finally, it seemed like they were going to have a baby.

“This is it Babe,” Chris said, his hand rubbing over Jared’s still flat stomach, “we’ve done it.”
