roof....

Apr 27, 2009 08:33

today is really frustrating.
for one, the roof is not done. the tar paper showed up on a giant truck this morning at about 7:15.. The roofers came soon thereafter. Unfortunately, our roof is not done. Our house is badly designed because of a lot of additions, so there is an awkward spot above our kitchen that needed rebuild. It also needed rebuilt because the boards were completely completely rotted out (thank you, carpenter ants!....). This rebuilding process was started the weekend before this just passed one, because Bob knew that it was going to take a while to design and rebuild. Also unfortunately, it was really cold and pouring down rain that weekend (Bob's whole "maybe it'll hold off"; "maybe it'll miss us" mentality is really driving me crazy lately... it's APRIL it rains!!), so the project was rushed together and done badly. So, it needed to be re-redone yesterday. And another unfortunate thing is that we had all been up working really hard for I think 23 hours straight, then took like a 4-5 hour nap. So the guys were trying to design this complicated roof structure going on that much sleep after that much work. Needless to say, it wasn't going well. About 10:30 last night the cops show up saying a neighbor (finally) called them to tell us to shut up. Understandably so! I can't believe no one called Saturday night when we were out there working until 4:30am! But, I guess last night they decided they'd had enough. Which honestly, is understandable... the work is loud! and we've been at it for about a week now. So we moved inside after the cops came and eventually decided it was best to try to get some sleep and start fresh in the morning. Cop said city ordinance is if you're making enough noise that it can be heard off of your property between 10pm and 7am, you can be fined $200something. They were empathic though, since we had no roof and didn't give us a ticket.
But anyway, this morning the roofers were supposed to come throw tar paper on the roof, but since there are 45mph wind gusts and a big-ish storm coming AND a part of our roof is still unbuilt, they decided to come back tomorrow. I feel really badly about that because we called them last week and said "AGH Bob started too early, we're gonna be done Monday can you come any sooner" so they rearranged their whole schedule for the week just to be here this morning, then they had to leave. :\ But it's about to rain, so they would've only gotten a couple hours of work in anyway. So about 20 minutes after the roofers left, I hear someone outside yelling up to Bob...I look outside to see this crabby lady, who always has a cigarette in her hand, from down the street (the same lady who yelled "that dog better be on a leash!" a while back when I was walking Jesse...[why wouldn't the dog be on a leash?? leave me alone!] and we suspect the same lady who called the city on us for having some trash bags piled up behind our house last summer [why was she lookin behind our house??]). She's out there yelling at Bob saying I called the cops last night cause you guys have been noisy for a whole week now and I'm tired of it! I have a job, etc, etc, it's too early you need to be quiet! (This was at about 7:30am... the trains have been out and about LOUDLY for hours by now...you'd think she'd be used to a little noise in the morning?). But anyway, I walked outside to talk to her (because Bob's really bad at talking to people he doesn't know, especially whent they're making him mad). I asked her to please stop bothering them, they're just trying to get this done as soon as possible. Then she started yelling at me about how we've been so loud all week and she's gonna call the cops again because we have to be quiet from 8-10 (14 hours? she knows that's bs). I was like umm no the cops told us 10-7 and it's now 7:30, so please just get off of our property... The whole time she's blowing smoke in my face and getting all teared up about how she's tired and has to go to work and stuff. I'm like yeah I know and it sucks! how do you think we feel? we're the ones who've been working for a week straight just to get a roof over our heads! AND it's about to start raining... I mean I'm sorry that it's loud, really-I am, but seriously? who are you to say that your sleep is more important than it not raining inside our house? (and who am I to say otherwise?) We've NEVER been this loud before, it's not a daily thing.. it's not like we're out there yelling and screaming and throwing stuff just to be obnoxious. We're trying to prevent it from raining inside our house! ...and it just now started pouring... :( :( :( :( :(
But after I got her to go back home (she went mumbling down the street) I felt a little bad.. I mean we are being noisy! It does suck that from 7am-10pm we can be as loud as we want and there's nothing she can do about it but complain. But I was trying to think, honestly, what would Jesus have done? Seriously, I mean it's not like we should be like "oh man, I'm so sorry.. we'll just stop putting up our roof since you need to sleep in." But it's not like we should just ignore her and tell her to f off (which I wanted to, but didn't...). What's the appropriate response to that? I'm sorry, but we're not going to stop until it's done. It won't be that much longer, we're frustrated too, lady! we're almost done.................. :\
