[FANFIC] EVEN THOUGH YOU DON'T KNOW ME.
White ceiling imprinted my first impression of this world when I opened my eyes. I thought I’ve been into a very, very deep sleep before being back to conscious. I thought I died, I thought it was the end of my life.
“Mister, can you hear me?” A middle-aged woman in pink asked.
I nodded.
“Hold on, I’ll go call for the doctor.” Before I could react anything, she has already left the room.
I stood up by myself. I scanned around the room and tried to recap what happened. Why am I here? Is this the hospital? Am I in one of the wards? I thought about these questions, until I sees a brunette, slightly bigger sized than me, is sitting on the bed, blindfolded.
“You went through an accident too?” Trying to start up a conversation with my ward-mate, I failed by getting no replies. “Hello?” I voiced out again, but still replies are not given back.
Just then, a group of four stepped into my ward. - One in white, three in pink. “Okay, Mr. Lee Eun Hyuk… right?” He focused himself at the sheet of paper above a green board.
I nodded.
“Can you hear me?”
I nodded.
“Can you speak?”
“Yes, I can.”
“Okay. You’ve been in coma for three days.” He paused and absorbs another batch of information in the sheet of paper. “Do you remember what happened?”
I nodded.
“Accident. Over speeding. Crash.”
“Okay. You need to stay here for another week. We need to go into further treatment and examination.”
I nodded my head for the last time. The four of them left, and then the room remained the both of us, again. I turned around and stared at his blind-folded face. I thought I was going to look at him for the rest of my life. I won’t get tired of it, not at the slightest. But he budges before I could continue staring him. Seems like he’s planning to get something below his pillow. He dug for two and a half minutes and finally got himself a thin piece of paper - presuming it’s a photograph.
He smiled and tried to pass it to the other hand, but he caught the wrong edge and it dropped onto the ground. He panicked, trying to get down, I stopped him by grabbing his shoulder.
“I’ll get it for you.” I picked up the photo, took a glance of it, and my heart sank, immediately. “H-here…”
“Thanks!” He took the photo and smiled. “Sorry, but I couldn’t hear so I didn’t know someone’s here.”
He can’t hear? And he’s blind?
“I got into a car accident with my girlfriend.” He held the photo tightly. “I think… she died.”
I stayed silent. He couldn’t hear me anyway.
“And then I got myself blind.” He paused. “Now I can’t see and hear.” He laughed. “How… pathetic.”
I patted his back, giving him a signal that I’m still there, listening to him.
“I lost my sense of hearing since I was seven. So don’t be surprised that I can talk human language. I could see and hear… previously.” He stretched out the hand that was holding the photo. “This is me… and my girlfriend.” He smiled. “She’s pretty, right?”
“Yeah, gorgeous.” But I meant you. You can’t hear me, anyway.
“I want to join her… so much.” My eyes started to brim with tears.
Don’t.
Days went by in a blink of an eye. The treatment isn’t much of a torture. Just normal check-ups and maybe, a little bit horrible medications. But spending days with this man was one of my greatest happiness during my stay in the hospital. I could even say it was the only happiness.
When I opened my eyes on the last day of my stay, although I still visualized the same colour ceiling, although the sceneries outside the windows are still the same, although the bed, the desk, the chairs, the furniture are still in the same position, the human that was supposed to be at the next bed, isn’t there anymore.
I don’t want to pry anything out from the authorities. They wouldn’t let a single gas out anyway. It’s not like I’m related to him, too. Even though I don’t know your name, even though I’ve only seen your bare face once, even though I know you’ve got a girlfriend, even though you don’t know me, I think I… love you.
