There has been no rest this summer. So far it's been from SAT Preparation to helping with the Twins to visiting in New Jersey to doing almost nothing but looking for a job.
Everything else was just shoved completely to the back of my mind. It's mainly been about the babies though. I'll post some pictures in another entry.
We found out that the twins didn't have enough of some hormone in their body, so they were a little Jaundice. Not enough to really cause alarm, but enough that they had to be put in the these ultra light cribs to stimulate their body's into developing the missing hormone. They seemed in the clear so the doctor sent them home.
About a day later Maria said that Sophia looked yellowish to her, so they went to the doctor. Both were still Jaundice, but just barely. The doctor said this was really common with newborns. Just have them stay in indirect sunlight as often as possible. Sean was over it fairly quickly, but it took Sophia a little longer to get it all out of her system.
Both are now in perfect health and getting stronger everyday. Sophia is a very quiet, docile baby. She only cries when she's REALLY hungry, or if she's been in a dirty diaper too long. She's kind of got this, "As long as everyone is serving my every need, I'm good." attitude. '-_-
Sean is definitely more needy. If he wakes up alone, (mainly if Sophia isn't there) he starts to get upset. He also gets upset if his blanket is too tight, or if he gets cold. He's REALLY hard to feed. You have to stop and burp him at every ounce he gets, or he'll yell at you. He loves being held to your chest (I suspect he finds the heartbeat soothing) which is the only way we've figured out to get him to sleep.
You can already see the amazing bond they share. They seem infinitely comforted by the presence of the other. If one of them is fussy (usually Sean) just lie them very close to each other, and it usually calms them. They also notice when the other is crying. Whenever Sean is crying, Sophia starts to make small noises and shift. Sean usually starts crying too when Sophia is crying. When Sara or Mary are crying, they don't even notice. It's really a phenomenal thing to watch. All I can think about when I see it is how much I'm going to love watching them grow up.
Sara's reaction to all this is pretty hostile, poor baby. She's been throwing tantrums at every turn, giving attitude 24 hours a day, etc. I'm sure it's part of her age, but she probably feels really frustrated about the whole thing. One: She feels like everyone is loving the twins more than her. Two: she wants to be a good big sister, but everyone keeps telling her not to touch the babies (she's WAY to rough, she hits them on the head chanting "MY BABY!") and that she's to young to hold them. Three: this is a tough age to begin with. Her mind is wrapping itself around the concept of rules, potty training is being attempted, and she still has to deal with her hypoglycemia problems. I think she'll adjust just like she did with Mary. It'll just take time. We also have to make sure that she doesn't get pushed to the side, and make sure she knows how much we love her.
Mary, who is one now, has no clue about any of this. She's teething and insists on chewing on everything she gets her hands on (including ME). She eats more than I've ever seen a baby eat in my entire life. It's kind of scary. She may eat almost as much as I do. Yeah. Little scary. The doctor says that this is a very good sign. As long as we feed her the right foods, all is well. We had the exact opposite problem with Sara. She almost never wanted to eat, and when her hypoglycemic seizures problem roared it's ugly head it REALLY became a concern. No signs of it with Mary though, seems she just consumes everything in her path. She also likes to run up and down the halls singing (at least we think it's singing).
Mary and Sara would seem to have formed some sort of alliance against everyone else. Sara was in trouble so she was sent to her room. There was screaming, yelling, and much kicking. She was banging on the door (although she wouldn't dare open it herself) and Mary lets her out. SINCE WHEN CAN SHE OPEN DOORS?!?!? We just stared with our jaws open. Sara was surprised too. She patted Mary's head, and went back to whatever she was doing. I couldn't stop laughing. It was one of the greatest things I'd ever seen. I said, "That is what I call comradery!" All Dad could say was, "I call that collusion." He had that, 'We need to stop this here and now.' look in his eye.
Personally, I wouldn't change anything. They are fantastic, all four of them.
