I've studied the French language for about 10 years. It was practical during my semester abroad, but since I've been back, it hasn't been that helpful. Majoring in French just kind of happened. It was originally only going to be a minor, but then I found out that if I studied abroad, I'd come back only needing 2 classes to get the major as opposed to the minor. Anyway, I never really thought that my language skills would be particularly helpful in my job as a wedding assistant.
Apparently I was wrong.
On Sunday, I had a wedding rehearsal for a wedding that's going to take place NEXT Sunday (strange, I know) and the bride is originally from Burkina-Faso, a francophone African country. The bride speaks fluent English, having lived here and gone to school for goodness knows how long, but her parents don't speak English. So, it was very good that I was the wedding assistant for this wedding since I'm the only one of the wedding assistant who speaks French, as far as I know.
The bride's parents and aunt, well, all the people on the bride's side seemed pleasantly surprised that I spoke French. It was kind of cool.
Oh, and ask me about Fine Kleine Nachtmusik.
