This weekend was my first weekend "flying solo" for my new position with Catering St. Louis as a Wedding Assistant. What I do is run the rehearsal and then make certain that the wedding runs smoothly the day of. My first wedding was made a bit more complicated by several things, first, the rehearsal was originally scheduled to be only a half hour long instead of an hour. To make matters worse, the day of the rehearsal, there was a tornado warning and severe thunderstorms. I didn't think I was going to make it in to work for the rehearsal at first since I'd had to bundle up the cats and take them and myself down to the basement. Anyway, I got to work 15 minutes before the rehearsal was supposed to start which was 15 minutes later than I wanted to arrive. My supervisor started the rehearsal early and inside due to the weather and started upsetting my bride with how high-strung she is.
Based on the 23-step outline I was given of the ceremony, it looked like it was supposed to be a Catholic wedding, but I know that, at least in this Diocese, Catholic weddings aren't permitted to be outside; they have to be in a church. I was also confused by the fact that the officiant/minister was wearing all black and a roman collar, but he went by "Brother John." I finally couldn't take it anymore. I asked Brother John after the ceremony.
I told him that I was really confused about the denomination of the wedding ceremony. He explained that he was a Jesuit permanent Deacon, which is why he goes by Brother. As far as the ceremony itself, it wasn't technically a wedding. Technically, it was a renewal of vows ceremony. The couple had actually gotten married that morning in a church with only their witnesses present.
Apparently at one point before the ceremony the bride said to one of her bridesmaids, "That assistant girl seems more stressed out and freaked out than I am." To which the bridesmaid replied, "That's her job." That's really the truth. If I freak out or stress out, that's fine. If the bride freaks out or stresses out, then there is a problem.
