Home of Hellas, Father of Theatre

We're still alive. we had a wonderful remainder of time in istanbul. my friend cigdem and her friends and cousins were absolutely wonderful and really helped us navigate the city. and turkish baths are the most amazing thing i have ever done for myself.
we're in athens now. it's gorgeous. not the city, per se, but the country. the sky is soooooo blue, and the city spreads in all directions into the hills and mountains. it looks beautiful from far away. from up close, it's as seedy and dirty as everyone says. i'd compare it to....cleveland. or gary.
but the ruins are fantastic and i'm so happy with the work they're doing on the acropolis
the parthenon is closed for august, so there is no opportunity for me to see a show, but i walked the aisles of the theatre of dionysus, and i studied the makeup of the stage and basically saw first hand all those things they spent all those years jamming into my head.
when i was sitting in one of the aisles, a little piece of marble fell next to my hand, and i took it with me. now i have a tiny piece of the original stage - the birthplace of theatre - to take with me. and it was already broken off, so i' not destroying the site.

it's almost unbearably hot. we got started at 7:30am, and by 4pm we were all so painfully dehydrated. we've already drank 5 liters of water between the 3 of us, but that is clearly still not enough. we tried to drink more, but if you drink too much too fast you just get a stomach and headache.
and yet we really like it. we're going to let it cool down a little outside and then head back out to see what's left. it looks like we'll miss the museums because they are closed now, and on mondays, and we'll be beaching for the next two days - I Can't Wait!!!
probably Aegina, but jenna wants to go somewhere else as well. i guess it's really up to the ferry's and time.
oye. time to shower some of this grime off and rest my poor sunstroked head.
hopefully the remainder of the turkey pics and our first day in athens will be up soon. i have at least another 700mb of pics and video to upload.
