Marvel Movies Jotun

So, a lot of fic is very Jotun-sympathetic. I get that the winners write the history and we don't know the Jotun side of the story, but still. They did apparently invade earth around 1000AD such that Asgard had to come in and save us. Also, perfectly intelligent people (like Loki for instance) over the course of a thousand years didn't question ( Read more... )

Zero evidence they ever came to earth - if you look at the climate record for the time specified in the movie, we were on a hot upswing at that time. No record anywhere of cold weather.

To us, I think it just reads like 'the winners write the history'. I'm not saying the Jotuns are good guys or anything, but there's no evidence they are bad guys, either.

Historically, if you look at the myth side of things as well as the Marvel movie, Asgard were always the bad guys. Odin wanted the power of the gods, so he murdered the creator of all life, accidentally drowning all Jotuns in the blood (all Jotuns came from Farbauty in the myths - lots of incest there! But then Laufy was female and an Asir... yeah). In the myths Odin kidnapped Frigga and her family, murdered her mother, etc, and took her a prisoner, conquered all the realms for shits n giggles (and cool-ass weapons), and to ensure that his people died in battle so they could go to Valhala. He's a lot softer in comic books, though, but still, not exactly a good guy. Both cultures rely on war and battle and death to avoid going to Viking hell.

Yeah, I kinda figured people were getting all this Odin-suspicion from outside the movies. In the movie only though, the Jotun invasion can be taken as fact, can't it? We even have video! I don't see a hint in the movie that Odin and the Aesir made it up.

Do you see Jotuns on earth? I thought we only saw As fighting in Jotunheim, when Odin takes the casket and the baby and loses an eye...

We do. Humans in villages crying and running away and being killed by Jotun. That's right before the Jotunheim stuff.

Right, I should rewatch. I still think it comes down to winners writing history. A bit like America 'rescuing' Iraq from whatever they were supposed to be rescuing it from, and managing to kill 100,000s of civilians and destroy their civilisation in the process. The most powerful person in the fight gets to say they're right.

Can't really go by mythology, as much as I enjoy fanfic that draws upon it, that changes all the time, with every different story.
