Being a Mary in a Martha world...

Tonight at VLT (Vineyard Leadership Training), Jim Egli read the story of when Jesus goes to visit Mary and Martha. We discussed which character in the passage that we related to. And while we were worshipping, it all began to make sense... I had let my ministry become a "Martha" ministry. I worry so much about the details and the little things that I forget to take some "Mary" time. As I sat and dialouged with God about this, he reminded me about Mexico. The moments when I felt like I really made a difference were the times when I invested in the kids, when I got into their lives and when I focused on the relationships. My times there that I remember the most were not in the classroom, they were sitting up with the girls at night, hearing their stories. Its when I got into their lives and started caring and falling in love with them, that is when Mexico became ministry. As I have shared with some of you, I don't feel like I am making any kind of difference in my ministry here. I think God is helping me see that something has to change in my "Martha" mentality in order for me to really see that my ministry is fruitful. I need to take time to cultivate relationships with the kids and parents alike. Tonight I simply asked God to extend my time on Sunday mornings, so that I can take care of both the Mary and the Martha elements of my ministry. Interesting and something I am sure I will share more about soon...
In other words, my birthday is in 10 days! However, I am quite sure this one will pass just as the last have...disappointing. My mother declared last year that I was too old to really celebrate... It has been years since I have a real birthday party and I'll admit that I miss it... This may sound like a guilt trip, but please know that is NOT at all what it is... I am simply venting some frustration.
Also- My Illini boys lost on Saturday. As disappointed as I am, there is nothing to be ashamed of in going 15-1. Plus, it seems like everyone else lost as well... Man I love college basketball! I think I often catch people off guard when they realize just how much sports knowledge I have. How fun is that?
Hope everyone has a great week and maybe someday I will actually update more regularly!

Laughter gives us distance. It allows us to step back from an event, deal with it and then move on.
