Title: Clark Kent for the Defense
AU/Fandom: Clark Kent, Esquire/Smallville
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Rating: Mature (at least)
Summary: Attorney Clark Kent is drawn back into the life of his former mentor, Lex Luthor, when Lex asks Clark to defend socialite Lana Lang when she is charged with murdering Lex's ex-lover, Jason Teague's mother, Genevieve Teague. Clark finds this murder case may be related to his own mysterious past.

"I'm surprised you bothered to return from Hong Kong. Aren't you planning on spending Christmas there?" Jason faced Edward Teague over lunch at Signatures, Metropolis' most popular restaurant with the rich and powerful.

"Your mother was murdered! Of course I came home to be with you," Edward was indignant.

"I suppose appearances must be met. And there is her will to read," Jason replied dryly

Edward didn't bother to deny his son's words. "Your mother and I had a business arrangement since you were very young. All of us benefitted from it. The company wasn't devalued by being divided during a messy divorce. You kept a stable home. She and I didn't interfere in one another's lives, but we were always there for you."

"Oh, it was all very civil, Father. But civility didn't make growing up with Genevieve Teague as a mother an easy experience."

"I am aware of your Mother's obsessions with her family history and your place in society. It was one of the things we most disagreed about."

"Did you disagree with her interference in my personal life? She destroyed my relationship with Lex Luthor by demanding that I marry and provide her with an heir. A girl of good breeding from a small town with a thriving business of her own wasn't good enough, however."

"You were her only child, Jason." Edward tried to soothe his son. "Genevieve could have handpicked your mate herself and they wouldn't have been good enough for you."

"Mother wasn't jealous of Lex or Lana, Father. She simply refused to allow me to have any sort of life of my own. When I wanted to study business, she insisted on law. When I fell in love with Lex Luthor, she decided that I needed to widen my horizons and take a Grand Tour -- preferably with a woman. When I found someone I considered suitable, Mother got herself murdered in her apartment. "

"I think that's a bit melodramatic, even for Genevieve."

"It has her fingerprints all over it, Father. She wanted Lillian to lose those artifacts and she wanted Lana out of my life."

"How does being dead get her either one, Jason? I'd be more convinced that your Mother was responsible for all of this if she were the one accused of murder instead of the one we are burying."

"Mother was nothing if not subtle."

"She wasn't suicidal, Jason."

"No, she was insane."

"Jason!"

"Really, Father. Tell me that thought she was playing with a full deck."

"Your mother was ambitious and willful, but she was completely sane."

"Then explain why she arranged to kill herself in Lana's apartment with a stone that most credible archeologists claim is nothing more than a polished meteorite?"

"Meteorite?"

"The artifacts aren't from Earth. Didn't you know, Father?" Jason leaned back to enjoy his father's discomfort.
