Title: Clark Kent for the Defense
AU/Fandom: Clark Kent, Esquire/Smallville
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Rating: Mature (at least)
Summary: Attorney Clark Kent is drawn back into the life of his former mentor, Lex Luthor, when Lex asks Clark to defend socialite Lana Lang when she is charged with murdering Lex's ex-lover, Jason Teague's mother, Genevieve Teague. Clark finds this murder case may be related to his own mysterious past.

Clark had his driver take Lana home when she assured him that she would be fine.

"Lana was right, Clark. The security on the Stones and the auction items was one of the hottest news topics in Metropolis before the Gala. While none of the details were released to the public, the fact that LuthorCorp's insurers were demanding such extensive measures was." Chloe's cousin, Lois Lane, was one of the reporters chasing those news stories.

"The security for the Gala was rather unusual despite the guest list and the auction items. Metropolis isn't Gotham City. We don't have costumed vigilantes patrolling the city, attracting criminals like the Joker and the Penguin to challenge the likes of the Batman for control. Our police force suffers from none of the corruption that was rampant in Gotham before James Gordon became Commissioner."

"Lillian Luthor did invite Bruce Wayne to co-chair the Gala. Perhaps that made the insurers nervous?"

Clark nodded. "Perhaps. I've scheduled Lex's deposition for tomorrow at ten. I've already suggested that he knows who murdered Mrs. Teague."

"Was that wise?" Chloe asked.

Clark smiled and shrugged. "It was a calculated risk. Family loyalty means everything to Lex. I believe that the person responsible used him or a member of his family to acquire the Stone. If that person is someone Lex considers family, Lex is going to have very difficult decisions to make."

"I'm sure that you will be able to help Lex make the right ones," Chloe assured him with a pat on the arm.

"You seem to spend as much time here giving statements against muggers and would-be rapists as you do interviewing potential clients, Mr. Kent," Officer Barrows jokingly commented as Clark once again found himself downtown after his early morning jog through Metropolis City Park -- this time having rescued a fellow attorney who was cutting across the park on his way to a meeting at the courthouse.

"Has your watch commander thought of stepping up patrols through the park?" Clark shot back, angrily. "And to think, I was just telling someone that Metropolis didn't have the problems Gotham did with its police force. If it's not safe for people to use the public walkways on the way to the courthouse, that doesn't say much for how you are doing your job. What would The Daily Planet say about that?"

"Is that some sort of threat, Kent?" a baritone voice spoke from behind him.

Clark turned around to face the newcomer. The voice came from the assistant district attorney, Pete Ross. Ross never let the fact that Kent stood at least a head taller intimidate him.

Barrows took the opportunity to slip away and let Ross take the brunt of Kent's latest rant.

"Hardly. I just don't want The Planet's resident pit bull, Lois Lane, hounding me for a story about how Metropolis is becoming as unsafe for its citizens as Gotham City."

"Are you appointing yourself Metropolis' own superhero? Mild-mannered defense attorney by day, champion of helpless joggers in the early post-dawn hours?" Ross drawled.

"Surely you jest, Ross. Me, mild-mannered?"

Ross shrugged. "I've heard that you are defending Lana Lang."

"Don't be coy. Has the DA assigned you to prosecute?"

"I'm looking forward to meeting you in court. Unless your client is willing to work something out to keep herself off death row?"

Clark reached out and patted Ross' shoulder. "First rule of prosecuting the big case, Ross. Don't let the defense see any weakness. I've got to get home. Mother is back from Hong Kong today."
