Summary: Attorney Clark Kent is drawn back into the life of his former mentor, Lex Luthor, when Lex asks Clark to defend socialite Lana Lang when she is charged with murdering Lex's ex-lover, Jason Teague's mother, Genevieve Teague. Clark finds this murder case may be related to his own mysterious past.
Lex swept through the double glass doors into Luthor, LLC. Molly Griggs, an efficient brunette marketing analyst and paralegal taking notes on a tablet PC, met him at his private elevator. She followed him inside and pressed the button to take them swiftly to the executive suite.
"The partners have been asking questions about Mrs. Teague's murder," she informed him.
"I want the practice group heads in the conference room in twenty minutes. Genevieve Teague's murder is not going to play havoc with this firm. I've drafted my official statement to the press and sent the document reference to your email. I would appreciate your comments before anything is released." Lex straightened his tie slightly just before the elevator doors opened and they stepped out onto his floor.
"I've read the statement, Lex. I don't understand why you are being so supportive of Ms. Lang." Molly frowned at Lex.
"I was wondering about that myself." Jason Teague rose from the chair where he sat waiting outside Lex's office.
"Molly, can you please arrange that meeting?" Lex dismissed Molly calmly.
"Right away, Lex." Molly walked away without another word, recognizing the volatility of the situation.
"Jason, we can speak in my office. Good morning, Susan," Lex addressed his secretary before leading Jason into the book-lined office. Lex took a seat behind the glass-topped desk with it's dual monitored computer and offered Jason the comfortable seat in front of it. Jason didn't sit down. He paced nervously in front of the desk.
"Why did you hire Clark Kent to represent Lana?"
"You asked me to find her an attorney. He's the best I know." Lex was confused.
"She may have killed my mother!" Jason objected.
"I thought you believed she was innocent!"
Jason stopped for a moment. "Why would Lana have met with Lillian before the Gala? Before I picked her up at her Gallery to attend the Gala?"
"Wasn't Lana one of the artists and gallery owners who donated works to be auctioned off at the Gala for Lillian's charity? Couldn't that have been the reason for their meeting?" Lex hid his own surprise at this bit of information.
"Lana's painting was delivered two days before the Gala."
"Jason, I'm not the person you should be asking these questions. Talk to Lana."
"They won't let me visit her."
"You haven't paid her bail?" Lex did frown at this.
"I don't have that kind of money, Lex. Mother was telling the truth at the Gala. I was completely dependant on her for my income."
"You would have dropped Lana if Genevieve continued to object?" That changed things.
"Of course not!" Jason tried to deny the accusation, but Lex saw the weakness in his eyes.
"I'll arrange for Lana's bail."
"Thank you."
"Don't thank me. Your father is returning from Hong Kong today. He'll expect that this scandal be kept to a minimum."
Jason winced, then nodded and left Lex's office.
Lex reached for his phone.
