Televisions all across the star system were tuned to one station. People sat huddled around the screens, faint blue light bathing their faces, an uneasy silence settled over living rooms and bedrooms, restaurants and bars. What had started a week ago, maybe two, had grown and finally people were taking notice. Even The Chapterhouse had gone eerily quiet.

Early Wednesday morning, the body of twenty-one year old Joanna Ripley was found in an alley on the south side of Siam. An only child, Joanna was a student at New Tokyo University, engaged to be married after graduation in the fall. Investigators claim to have no leads or suspects, but currently all manpower is going into the case. A peel of laughter rang out from somewhere in the back of the bar, and dozens of angry eyes turned toward the group of girls giggling together in the corner booth. One of them, the youngest, sneered and muttered an annoyed, "What the fuck is everyone staring at?" but her words were swallowed up by the swell of voices, everyone seeming to start talking at once. She'd broken the spell, and once again, the television played on over the bar unnoticed.
