Once upon a time, Benton Fraser took a sweet young thing named Apple home. Unfortunately, Ray comes to discover that Fraser's new friend is actually a killer, and they go together to arrest her.

Some time later, Benton Fraser comes upon Tony in the middle of a kill. After a brief scuffle, Fraser manages to apprehend Tony and carry him to the police. Tony is booked, and Things That Shouldn't Be Said to Ray are said anyway, and Fraser flees for fear of a kick to the head.

After a period of brooding, Ray comes to visit Fraser at the bookstore. The two men make up, and then some.

After their first and second dates are interrupted by tragedy, revelation, and a pursesnatcher, Ray and Fraser embark on a third, and run smack into the worst killer of them all. After incapacitating Fraser with a drug, Jacob is just about to finish him off when Ray bursts onto the scene. The two men fire at the same time. Ray is gravely wounded, and Jacob mortally so.

Ray wakes up in the hospital the next day to find a troubled and concerned Fraser at his side. Fraser promises to take care of him, and Ray asks Fraser to move into his apartment.
