I went to a little presentation today where you learn to roll sushi and also get to eat a bunch of stuff the chef makes while he explains how to make things work and generally answers questions.
One of the things someone asked is what ratio of water to rice they use; he had an industrial (read: toilet-bowl sized) rice cooker. His response was "7 lbs of rice to 10 lbs of water". To which, everyone said "Uh....how much water is that?!?"
I piped up with "water weighs a little over 8 lbs per gallon, so 10 lbs should be roughly a gallon + 2 cups". And everyone looked at me very oddly. Dunno why. I know a lot of other people that could have figured that answer out in about as much time as it took me & without having to look anything up--like my dad.
On a side note, if you like sushi & live in the 'Cities, you should totally sign up to take a sushi class from Lunds/Byerly's sometime. It costs $15, but you eat sushi rolls almost the whole class so you walk out stuffed full & with a $10 gift card for the grocery store!
