I love music, just as long as it's groovin'

In an attempt to write more in my LJ, I'm going to start writing about music. Nothing technical cause I iz dum about that stuff, but more how I love it and how it affects my moods and just how I relate to it despite my lack of musical talent.

I'll start off with The Carpenters. I was listening to my iPod (which is a godsend) on my way home from work today and one of their songs came up. I noticed that, despite Karen Carpenter's sweet voice, the song is really just supremely sad. The song was Hurting Each Other, and it started out with a woman talking about the great and true love that she has with this guy, but by the chorus, it actually wonders why despite this love, they just keep hurting each other (aaaand song title!). So.fucking.sad.

And then I remembered some other Carpenters songs that are just so friggin slit your wrist that you want to, well, slit your wrist. I dialed to my Artists section and pulled up The Carpenters' The Singles and hit play. There are at least 3 songs that I know of from that collection that are just as sad as Hurting Each Other:
-Superstar, which I heard someone comment on on I Love The 70s, 1971 that it's about a fan who slept with a musician and is waiting for him to come back to her. I never really listened to the lyrics to this song, but gaaaahhhhd, it so fits! I wonder if Ruben Studdard knew that when he auditioned with that song on American Idol.
-Rainy Days And Mondays: I love this song, but Jesus Christ. "rainy days and Mondays always get me down". Good Lord.
-Goodbye To Love: probably the song I most identify with. Not to worry. I'm not depressed or anything. It's more the part about not ever finding anyone.

I do love some of their songs, and Karen's voice is a sweet juxtaposition to the sadness. Brilliant.
