Remus has hated himself since he received the werewolf bite when he was just three and a half years old. He didn't think there was anything worse than being a werewolf and transforming every month (twice during blue moon months). This month, however, Remus has found a new thing to hate about being a werewolf, the stuff he gets to miss. He has a friend now, Lily Evans, and it's just not fair that he can't go to this party that she's having. Well, as it turns out, she's not having the party, Jordana is having the party, and Lily could bring someone, so she asked Remus. And Remus had to say no. Because the second full moon in December that year fell right on 31 December.
That night, Remus is imagining what everyone will be doing. He is imagining what it is like to be fully human and not have to worry about anything, not have to worry about your friend finding out your secret and then telling everyone, and then not having a friend anymore. To be fully human and go to Jordana's party. But the full moon fell not only on the second of December, but the thirty first of December as well.
Dumbledore had been kind enough to allow Remus to remain at the school over the holidays for the break. There are just two other students staying, siblings from Hufflepuff. Christmas dinner is the worst that Remus can ever remember. His mother owls him, sends him his gifts, but it's not the same. On 30 December, late in the evening, Dumbledore leads Remus to the Whomping Willow and this time at the Shreiking Shack, the screams start far before moon rise and end hours after the moon has set.
