Iris was beginning to fall into a routine at the mansion. After dinner, she'd taken to sitting outside on the patio with her notebook. Back at Oxford, she'd always preferred to do her work with the noise of the pub in the background. But here, she found that she enjoyed the relative peace and quiet afforded by the size of the estate.
Tonight, she'd decided she should probably write to her family back in England, to assure them that she was fine. She had phoned her parents when she'd first arrived Stateside, but had been so caught up in her new life, that she'd let her dutiful daughter responsibilities fall to the wayside. So she uncapped her pen, took a sip of the gin and tonic she'd made herself (her letters were always much better after a drink or two), and began to write.
Dear Bea,
Her pen rested on the paper as she tried to think of what she could say to her sister. Remember that bloke from a while back, Charles? He's a mutant, so am I, and he's gathered a whole lot of us together...
If only. She stared at the blank paper, tapping her pen against the table while she thought. After a good minute, she gave up, setting the pen down with a sigh. Taking another sip, she turned her gaze out across the grounds, letting her mind wander.
