Wow, I was just realizing how good they are. It's easy to forget, because they're always changing their style. More often than not, they sound too much like another band. But which band that is shifts, and somehow, they manage to make excellent songs.
In te early days, they were compared to Joy Division and the Cure. This happens to most goth bands, and is mainly the fault of unsophisticated reviewers who don't have anything more specific with which to compare them. But, many tracks sound eerily Cure-like, especially in the vocals. there's some good stuff in that part of the catalogue.
Fast forward to their pop album, Twist of Shadows. There are some excellent tracks on board. "Imagination" is wonderful, and falls into the category of New Order, etc. Some of the other tracks, with male vocals, resemble Depeche Mode equally as much. But it was goooood.
When "Creatures" came out, I heard Jasmine and Rose, and thought, "Who is this Sisters of MErcy copy band? They are good." Indeed, the vocal style had changed, they sounded too much like SoM, and their various imitators, such as Merry Thoughts. But it was excellent.
Then, "Farewell". The title track is poppy electronica to compete with Covenant. Again, they stepped into a new genre and did and awesome job. The second track sounds far too much like Diary of Dreams, but, it's good.
I just got "In Love We Trust" in the mail. I'm listening to it now. I haven't come to any serious conclusions about it yet, but I hope it lives up to what I expect from them. I had to buy it anyway: the cover has a fencing mask. 8-)
