A Tree Grows

A tree grows in Brooklyn
The same Brooklyn
that has
buildings and
towers and
skyscrapers built
over top of thirsty
soil and
children's playgrounds.
No one slides anymore.
Not down the molded plastic
into childhood chuckles
not down smooth branches
of a once strong tree
that provided shade for
the New York immigrants
seeking a better life
in America.

All that's gone, now.
The trees.
The slides.
Because
A tree grows
in Brooklyn.
In Cleveland.
In St. Louis.
In Boston.
In cities,
Only to be cut down
and made into some
Ikea table or chair
to make a design impact
in your living room.
