Kyo/Tohru Fanmix

Whoa, a miracle happened. Yousendit worked on my computer for the first time ever! I am taking advantage of this because I don't know how long it will last. I share with you a Kyo/Tohru fanmix I made. It's mostly love songs and it spans the course of the series. I tried to avoid spoilers. If I can, the Akito fanmix I made is next. This is my first mix, so I hope I didn't screw it up, lmao. It is an incredibly mellow mix, too.

Even if you don't like Fruits Basket, you might be interested in some of the songs.

Unintended: A Kyo/Tohru Fanmix

1. Always For You by Michelle Featherstone
Mutual POV. This strikes me both as little Kyo longing to meet and protect Tohru and Tohru's initial meeting of Kyo. Tohru has always loved the cat from the zodiac, but she didn't meet the "real" Kyo until she mistook him for a pervert, haha. There was a mutual desire for each other's company long before the two knew each other, and this song seems to flow in and out of their relationship through the entire course of the series. Plus, the song is simply stunning.

You were drowning
and I picked you up and set you free
I was fading
and you breathed the life back into me
can I be sure this is what I've been looking for

'cause I'm dying to meet you
and I'm trying to reach you
as of yet we've not met
but I'm here waiting always for you

you were trembling
and I held your hand so close to me
and I was crying
and you whispered that you'd rescued me
I planned a day when I see you come my way

2. Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime by Beck
Both Kyo and Tohru needed to learn that it was okay to love. They both have serious abandonment issues, to say the least. The lyrics are simple, but it's put together nicely.

Change your heart
Look around you
Change your heart
it will astound you
I need your lovin'
Like the sunshine

Everybody's gotta learn sometime

3. Beautiful Things Can Come From The Dark by Azure Ray
Tohru's POV. One of my favorites for this 'ship. Tohru manages to find hope in Kyo, even when he can't see it. I think this song captures beautifully her unending belief and accepting of him (especially vol 6 or the end of the anime), and for much of the series, her silent desire for Kyo to let her into his heart. This song is melodic, slow and has some beautiful violin. I think of their moments on the rooftop when I hear this. (Tohru/Yuki fans might like this song, too.)

Someone else's boy
You’ve had it so hard
Will you grow up to be you
Or a sum of your parts just hanging in the air
Someone else’s boy
Tell me your convoluted stories
Through your half-rotten mouth
I will decipher them
To tell the world of your heart
How beautiful things can come
From the dark

Someone else's boy
I have seen your face
Light in the stars
It was then I knew
That your heart was pure
That it had not yet been destroyed

4. Unintended by Muse
Kyo's POV and the title of this fanmix! Kyo never had any intention of falling in love (especially with Tohru), and Tohru had no intention of falling in love with Kyo. We see this in ch 119/120 and 114/129. It really does capture his hesitation to be with her because he's so busy 'mending broken pieces of the life he had before.'

You could be my unintended
Choice to live my life extended
You could be the one I'll always love

You could be the one who listens
To my deepest inquisitions
You could be the one I'll always love

I'll be there as soon as I can
But I'm busy mending broken
Pieces of the life I had before

5. Unconditional by The Bravery
This may be more of Kyo song, but it really strikes me as something he feels specifically about Tohru. For Kyo, easy things that 'normal' people take for granted are extremely difficult (think ch 126). This is something he repeats through out the series with Tohru, from unintentionally saying mean things to her, to hiding his true form, to being unable to say "I love you."

I've spent my whole life surrounded
and I've spent my whole life alone
I wonder why I never wonder why
The easiest things are so hard
I just want, I just want love (X3)
I just want something, something for nothing

I'm a beggar and I'm a chooser
I'm accused, I'm an accuser
But nothing's unconditional

I hold the whole world accused
I've only got myself to blame
I wonder why, I never wonder why
The easiest things are so hard

6. Breathe You In by Stabbing Westward
Mutual POV. They both love each other deeply, but are held back by their past. Both needed to face their pasts before they could be together. I think this captures their fear of doing just that. It's a pretty Stabbing Westward song, too.

I'm still afraid to feel
'Cause I cannot take the pain
I'm still afraid to feel
Afraid to lose someone again

I wish that somehow
I could leave
My past behind
My fears behind

If I could only breathe you in
Every drop of you

7. Crossing the River by The Devlins
Mutual POV. One of my favorite Kyo/Tohru songs. This song is beautiful and hopeful about overcoming your fear/pride/insecurities/angst to be with someone you love, which is very much what these two did.

Something tells me
I can trust in you
There's no pretense
In the things you do
So much water
Under this bridge
And I'm standing here
At the water's edge
Looking into your eyes
I'm crossing the river
To get to you

8. Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode
Kyo's POV. Through out a lot of the series, he loves her, but is determined to keep silent about it. Wanting to protect her (mostly from himself, because he's a strange kid), he's content with what he thinks is one-sided love. I think this song is Kyo trying to convince himself of that.

Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world

Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Can't you understand
Oh my little girl

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

9. I Love You by Sarah McLachlan
Tohru's POV. This is Tohru loving Kyo, but keeping silent about it, because they both have issues (ref: ch 114). Slow, soft, and beautiful vocals by Sarah McLachlan. I love how formal the lyrics are, and sound much like Tohru speaking.

I have a smile
stretched from ear to ear
to see you walking down the road
we meet at the lights
I stare for a while
the world around us disappears
it's just you and me
on my island of hope
a breath between us could be miles

Oh and every time I'm close to you
there's too much I can't say
and you just walk away

And I forgot to tell you
I love you
and the night's too long and cold here without you
I grieve in my condition
for I cannot find the words to say I need you so

10. Everything by Lifehouse
Man, this is a gorgeous love song. It's soft and slow until the bridge where it gathers force. The lyrics speak for themselves. There is also a line that says "You are the hope that keeps me trusting" and that sums up everything.

You calm the storms
You give me rest
You hold me in your hands
You won't let me fall
You steal my heart
And you take my breath away
Would you take me in
Would you take me deeper now

And how can I
Stand here with you
And not be moved by you
Would you tell me
How could it be
Any better than this

11. Lovesong by The Cure
Mutual. Self-explanatory, but this is very Kyo thinking about post-graduation (ref: vol 11). For Tohru, Kyo filled something she lost when her parents died; for her, he will always be home.

If ever I'm alone with you,
you make me feel
Like I am home again
If ever I'm alone with you,
you make me feel like I am whole again

However far away,
I will always love you,
However long I stay,
I will always love you,
Whatever words I say,
I will always love you

12. Alright by Kinnie Starr
Tohru's POV. From the moment Tohru asks Kyo if it's alright to be with him, this song has stuck with me. Wonderful beat and female vocals. Very smooth. I like the way "Is it alright?" becomes "it's alright" throughout the song.

Is it alright for me to feel this way?
Put my head in your lap, the world will go away
Well well, we can go there, we can go anywhere
We can go there.

But is it alright?
Is it alright?
Is it alright to hold you through the night?

13. Gamble Everything For Love by Ben Lee
Quirky and upbeat song that suggests what the title says. To avoid spoilers, think of Tohru's new goal at the end of vol 11. For Kyo, think of ch 126. Both really did gamble everything for love.

Make a list of the things you need
Leave it empty
Except for number one, write love
Gamble everything
Keep it under lock and key
If you wanna you can gamble everything for love

Tell me are you getting hurt?
Is it worth it?
Tell me are the people strange, do they change?
Tell me are you letting go, do you know?
I’ll tell you the truth, if you tell me the truth
If you gamble everything for love you’re gonna be alright

14. Sweetback by Curve
This song may sound out of place, because it's a more aggressive trip hop song with a mixed message, but it fits in an odd way (omg it's the onigiri of the soundtrack). I see this as a changed Kyo/Tohru (ch 130 on), finally starting to accept themselves and their place in the world, but it took a lot for them to get there. I think they realize that just like falling in love was rough, being in love will be as well, but it's something entirely worth it.

A single sound has changed me forever,
It's the sound of your love.
I never thought that I would be that lucky,
To behold your trust.

If I were to die at this very moment,
I'd be happy enough.
Let fate decide if our future's going,
As high as the sky above.

Then I'll be happy in love,
I'll be strong and tough,
I'll be sad enough,
I'll be dirty and rough.

15. Fever by Eva Cassidy
Haha, there is a reason they're always blushing around each other. :x

Sun lights up the daytime
The moon lights up at night
My eyes light up when you call my name
Because I know you gonna treat me right

You give me fever when you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
Fever all through the night
