There is a bit of a theme -not consistent, but recurring- that sometimes plot bunnies or even whole stories come to me because I find something lame or contrived (see also: the vampire thing, the 'blue moon' thing). I can't honestly say which I find worse, vampire romance fic or mpreg -that is, male mammalian humanoids suddenly and inexplicably falling pregnant, and believe me when I say the 'it just is' mpreg is still better than all attempts at an explanation- and I'm inclusive enough to divide my distaste evenly.
I'm fair like that.
It would be one thing if we were looking at a trans character who, despite identifying as male, winds up pregnant and carries the baby to term (whether out of choice or due to circumstances). There is so much potential in that story to look at what it does to his self image, whether he can keep the pregnancy separate from his gender identity, whether it empowers him or drags him down. That set-up, to my mind, is a valid story.
Making a biological male pregnant because you want to write twu luv and it's just not proper love unless babies!! is not. Stop doing that. Use your (obviously existent) creativity to come up with something, y'know, believable.
Anyway what happened, and this happened a while ago, is that I was ranting to myself about the ridiculousness of mpreg, along the lines of yeah, pregnant WITH A CHESTBURSTER, MAYBE, and then, yeah. So I've had this little story bouncing around for a while now where humans coexist with a parasitical species, a parasitical species that can easily beat them, no less. But that other species is evolved to the point of not having many offspring (as opposed to, say, insects) and they don't need so many hosts that it would really put a dent into the human population.
Still, you wouldn't go outside after dark, if you want to live.
But of course the main character winds up not making it home in time, and he is kidnapped and blessed with a baby impregnated infected seeded and is now looking at the fact that a few months from now, this little angel in his gut will eat him from the inside out. He needs a doctor, but he is far from home and halfway paralyzed. Fun!
I didn't really take it too seriously as a story, at the time, but it's been bouncing around and it keeps coming back and it's pretty detailed by now. So who knows.
not mpreg
