lisettelaroux gets worried if I don't post regularly during the week, she tells me (which is terribly sweet of her *sniffle*), so here is an update. :)
Work has become crazy busy, which means I probably won't have much time to post in the mornings for a bit - and when I get home, I'm either sleeping or working on sewing for Costume Con, so I'm probably going to be a bit sporadic for the next month. Not to mention, I've fallen terribly behind on my friends' list, and I do apologize; I don't want anyone to think I'm ignoring them.
(Uh, technically I am, but not because I'm reading your posts and going "well, I can't be arsed to reply", but because I haven't had the time to look at the list at all.)
I guess I'd better make every post count, huh?
That said, I am tired, and I hurt - today even more, since my doctor was poking and prodding me yesterday. But I did manage to get part of one costume finished (Victorian coat), and it looks reasonably good, despite being way outside my usual sewing experience. I still need to decide whether I want to decorate the skirt, but I still have the corset and camisole for that outfit to do, sleeves to add to a loose gown, a skirt and maybe another corset to make for another costume, and I owe several people large and complicated e-mails.
I dislike that I have to choose what I do on any given day because I do not have the strength to do it all. I need to win the lottery so that my actual paid job doesn't have to be attended to - I never want to work when I have projects running. But then, don't we all?
And, just so you know it's still me, I'm going to finish up with grumbling (more like snarling) at Burger King's ads again. Now, I love Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back" as much as the next '80s afficionado, and have been known to break into spontaneous performances of it when so moved, but I don't think it's really an appropriate soundtrack for an ad for Burger King's kid's meal. Even if it's been re-written so that it's all about square butts, because the kid's meal features Spongebob Squarepants. And especially when it features full-grown women shaking their square-padded rears while the King creature ogles them and dances.
I just think they're positioning the ad slightly above their intended demographic, that's all.
Okay, okay. I think it's disgusting. I love that song, but it's not remotely appropriate for it to be used in an ad for a product marketed to kids. It's pretty sexist (big surprise there, BK), it's way too grown-up for kids ordering a kid's meal*, and... oh, hell, double-you tee eff, BK? What the fucking eff?!
For God's sake, it's like the ad companies are regressing as the rest of society is moving forwards. Right after the BK commercial, I saw the Wal-Mart ad that features the song "How lovely to be a woman", which puts women on the same emotional maturity level as the song "Que Sera, Sera". While we may wear make-up, rest assured, Wal-Mart, we have moved on from the 1950s.
Speaking of the 1950s, I picked up a Ladies Home Journal from 1954 last weekend - I'll have to write about some of the awesomely ridiculous articles in it. And scan some ads. I love old ads. At least, I can laugh at the old ads when they're sexist, instead of grinding my teeth down to powder.
*(Yes, I order kid's meals half the time when I get fast food - the meal is a reasonable size, and I like the toy. Nevertheless, I am not the intended demographic.)
