Back to school, and not a minute too soon.  Here's a new story.  Really short this time.

Sam, You Will Fly

The sky was cloudy, but a mist hung lightly in the air like grapefruit juice, and the streetlamps shone off it so that everything was golden.  Sam walked slowly down the vacant street.  He pulled his collar close to his neck to cut the breeze.  A man far away lost his hat in the wind, and it scampered about on the ground, through puddles and into an empty doorway.  Sam watched a worm emerge from the earth.  He picked it up and examined it.  Long and moist, the worm barely moved in Sam’s grip.  So still.  He smelled the worm.  Rich and organic, the smell pleased Sam, and he smiled.  He put the worm back on the ground and continued to walk.

He passed a storefront with closed blinds.  An intense light shined through the slats, and because he was curious, Sam looked inside through a gap.  He saw naked women playing instruments and singing like they were in a band, but they weren’t synchronized, and he couldn’t really hear them, either.  Some moved around wildly, hitting drums and blasting trumpets, while some sat intently on the ground, humming a tribal song.  As he watched the scene, Sam felt his heart swell.  Though they were strange, Sam identified with the girls, and he wanted to go inside.  He tried to find the entrance to the building but couldn’t, and when he returned to the window, the women were gone.  He knocked on the glass- at first softly- and then louder.  Still, nothing.

In a foreign place, Sam stopped to sit at a park.  The sun had almost set completely on his day, but before it could tuck itself away, Sam flapped his wings and flew home, as a bird.
