Café breastfeeding.

I was out watching the release of the salmon smolt into the Rakaia River this morning with my hubby and boys. We stopped at Darfield for a coffee, and had to feed my 5-month-old. As I was leaving an elderly woman made a quiet comment to me: "It's so nice to see you young mothers feeding your babies; it's so important!"

The pedant in me says.. "ahuh; as opposed to those mothers who let their babies starve?" but it was an interesting point. Some mothers enjoy a pat on the back for breastfeeding in public. Personally I don't need the bolstering but it's nice to know that there are some people out there who are supportive enough of the idea that they feel it's important to mention.

On another point though, when did I become a "young" mother. Maybe she meant mother of young babies as opposed to mothers of, say, 10-year-olds... but still. I wouldn't think that 33 is a "young" mother these days. I hear average age in this country is 31, but that's the mean between the teen mothers and "elderly prima-gravidæ" in their 40s. I haven't got enough interest to track down the mode age.
