Disclaimer: Not real, dur.

Alright, yeah, I'm a nerd. I'm writing a fic based on the song: "In the Dark of the Night" from the children's movie "Anastasia". That movie kicks ass though, and this song was the best one in it. Lyrics have been slightly modified to fit the story -- lyrics are also written in pink, because there will be flashbacks in normal italics. Note, this story will only be a few chapters long (if I get enough reviews), because it's taking place over the course of one day, maybe two.

In the Dark of the Night

In the dark of the night I was tossing and turning, and the nightmare I had was as bad as can be -- it scared me out my wits -- a corpse falling to bits! Then I opened my eyes, and the nightmare was me!

.....

My curse made each of them pay, but one little boy got away...

In the dark of the night, evil will find him. In the dark of the night just before dawn. Revenge will be sweet, when the curse is complete. In the dark of the night...he'll be gone!

I can feel my powers are slowly returning.....

As the pieces fall into place, I'll see him crawl into place!

....Farewell....

Come my minions, rise for your master. Let your evil shine! Find him now, yes, fly ever faster. In the dark of the night...

Chapter 00 - Prologue

Hazel eyes snapped open, but the vision was cloudy and blurred; he was underwater. Shallow, dingy water, he could see the surface, where above it there were dark walls, dim lighting. His brain snapped to life, and as it clicked that his nostrils were filling with the dirty liquid, he shot up, gasping for air. As his sharp movement sent water everywhere, he caught sight of a figure falling backwards from being startled by his awakening.

As his vision cleared, he took in his surroundings, remembering exactly where he was. The setting was almost as if he were in a cave, and the dim lighting was coming from a light green mist that seemed to be floating everywhere. He was now sitting up in a small pool of water, maybe two feet high, just enough for him to be completely under when he laid flat on his back. In front of him, sitting outside of the pool, was a young looking man, he was easily recognizable.

"It worked." the young man said, dropping the book he'd been holding.

Matt grinned, ignoring the feeling of the water still leaking from his hair, down his face. "You doubted?" he asked.

Johnny smirked himself. "Of course not." he replied, "Just wondered."

Matt slowly climbed to his feet, the only sound now was the sound of the water's movements, echoing off the stone walls. He looked down at Johnny who stayed seated on the ground, watching him intensely.

"How do you feel?" the younger man asked.

"Weak." was the simple answer. "Which will hopefully end soon." He threw a small glance around. "How long has it been?"

Johnny looked down almost shamefully. "Twelve years." he answered.

"Twelve?" Matt repeated, uncontrollable anger starting to rack his body. "Why so long?"

"It was part of the curse." Johnny quickly answered, seeming to shrink. "I tried every year after it happened, but this is the first time anything's happened."

Matt gave a sigh, looking around again. "It could be worse I guess." he replied. "At least I know he's still alive...I can still find him."

"How do you know?" Johnny asked.

"I can feel him." Matt said. "It's like a subconscious thought -- how old would he be now?"

"Twenty-four." Johnny answered after a moment. "Master, how will we find him?"

"Easily." Matt answered shortly. He stepped up out of the small pool he'd been standing in, and he looked down at his soaked clothes. They were what he'd been wearing when he was killed. He made a face. "Get me some dry clothes." he said.

Leaving the book there, Johnny got up, and quickly disappeared. Matt bent, and grabbed the book, straightening and turning it so he could read it. A foreign language met his eyes, but as his memory was still returning, he smirked as he recognized the language of Darkness. His powers had started to return, and he was ready immediately to go back to the real world, find the boy.

Johnny returned, and Matt handed the book to him in exchange for the clothes. Moments later, after Matt'd gotten reasonably dry, and into his new clothing -- black pants, black muscle shirt, heavy boots -- he started for the opening of the cave that would lead him to the others, to the ones he ruled. Johnny followed behind him like a loyal companion, and as Matt stepped over the threshold, he was bombarded with greetings and praises. He felt his smirk turn into a grin, and he stopped, looking over the small crowd that'd been waiting for him.

"Tonight," he said, waiting for silence. "We find him." He side-glanced Johnny who had started to smirk too. "Tonight, we kill him. And tonight," he paused for dramatics. "We win."

There was a burst of chatter among them, and Matt turned to Johnny.

"Put your horns in." he said, gaze running over the one inch horns that protruded from Johnny's forehead, one on the right, and one on the left, like everyone else there.

"Why?" Johnny asked, wincing, as he did as he was told, reaching up and pressing his thumbs into them -- they seemed to disappear into his pale skin.

"It's not every day two shadow demons waltz into New York."

Review for me to continue.
