2009 is an important year when it comes to climate change (and global action against climate change). In fact, with the Global Climate Change Conference occurring in Copenhagen at the end of year, it is probably the make or break year when it comes to climate change.
My classes this semester have been filled with doom and gloom warnings about the state of the planet, but they've all been concluded with a largely positive message. It'll be too late soon, but it isn't too late now. Not if we're fast.
Today is a good day to try and do something. 50 million people switched off their lights during 'Earth Hour' last year and the goal is even more ambitious this year. All you have to do is switch off your lights for one hour - between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm, wherever you are - and you can make it clear that you won't stand for indolence anymore.
You can get more information from the
Earth Hour website and sign up via
the WWF.
Some major landmarks will be turning off their lights - Sydney Opera House, the Great Pyramids, the Eiffel Tower, Tapei 101 and the Empire State Building, to name but a few - and I really hope you decide to join in as well.
(Don't forget to promote the event, too. The more people who switch off, the clearer the message!)
