Did I mention that the library is brilliant? Inbetween locating my desired book and taking it to the checkout, I happened upon a dusty gold hardback entitled "Insects as Human Food" by Dr. W JUNK! (Well, the (c) is Dr. JUNK, the name on the text is something like Rosenheimer, but JUNK is a much better last name).
It is a very earnest academic tome from 1951 about who eats insects, why, and why doesn't everyone eat insects?
I will post up some interesting facts about insects as and when I learn them - here is one to start off with.
100g of fried termites contains 562 calories!
Also - are flying ants actually termites?!
It's definitely better than "Predictably Irrational" by Dan Ariely, which consists of a/ experimenting on MIT students, b/ gossiping about MIT and then c/saying "ah, you are paying more for things because they are in a pretty container, did you know this is predictable behaviour", to which we (I?), say, "yes"? If you live in a straw world where you've never perhaps had to budget, perhaps? I don't know the typical status of an MIT student which seems to be this guys entire sample for everything. I ended up feeling sorry for MIT students, all they ever seem to get is experimented on.
Actually there is a super experiment which involves students reactions to Budweiser straight, and Budweiser 'laced' with balsamic vinegar. His conclusions aren't that interesting, but the conclusion that everyone (blind) prefers Budweiser laced with balsamic DOES make me think "which condiment would taste BEST in Budweiser"... I am SURE that there's a fratboy market out there for Budweiser Tabasco, frex...
