Dressage (warning! clothing and knitting content!)

So, given I have been idly pondering making this top since - urk, 2003??? that can't be right! - I thought I would CROWDSOURCE OPINIONS, i.e viz...

Poll dress you up in my rubI think I would also do shorter sleeves! (Am vaguely unsure whether this would suit a womans figure (Mia Fey) rather than a girl's (well, Maya Fey) but omg have I seriously had this top on the mind ( Read more... )

My concern with that jumper would be that it's quite short, and thus might not actually keep me all that warm (cold kidneys!) plus there's the thing about tshirt being longer than jumper. Which is in the photo, obv, so maybe that is a Fashion Statement & I am just ignorant of such things?

I am not allowed to think about new clothes due to financial pressure. Although I have a couple of things I'd quite like to knit/sew, were it not for the fact that I seem to be uninspired on the knitting/sewing front right now. I am stuck on a pair of socks that I'm bored of; maybe I should just accept this & start on something else?

I am similarly ignorant and disapproving. But if it's knitted in the round one could just knit some more rounds?

(I am also pretty ignorant about knitting, obviously.)

Totally! I think you'd have to decide how you wanted the bottom to be shaped though, ie like the collar, or rolly up, ribbed wouldn't work, UNLESS you did a really DEEP rib, like 4x4 or something, from the sash under... ooh perhaps THAT might be good?! You have nice and flippy on the collar/sleeves but the waist is more fitted?

OR perhaps the sash itself should be deep ribbed and then go to a st st end.

Ooh!

This is all so totally hypothetical, I still don't even know what yarn I could use, AND this is probably below my skill level. BUT...

I thought it was a bit short too, but also presumed it could just be made, well, longer as desired? Or is that wrong?

I would say switch to something else if the socks are boring you right now, then maybe you'll get inspired again. Are you allowed to buy charity shop clothes if sufficiently cheap?

In theory yes (charity shop clothes); in practice right now no, b/c 'sufficiently cheap' is still > 0, and I really am a bit broke atm. If I sell another article this month I may go charity-shopping; but *really* I have plenty enough clothes i.e. the drawers etc are full.

I managed 10 months whilst away with only 8 tops &, hm, 3 skirts, 1 pair trousers? So a WHOLE CHEST OF DRAWERS & WARDROBE OF STUFF is clearly more than necessary.

You are correct re the socks. Boo to socks.

Only one pair of trousers?? I'd have needed more than that, I think, just for washing breaks. But I wear trousers a lot.

Ebay off some of your old clothes that you don't want any more?

(Heh, the idea of being able to fit all my clothes into 1 wardrobe and 1 chest of drawers is like some kind of tidying paradise. But weird in my head.)

IME Ebaying is a *lot* of hassle for very little money; if I'm getting rid of stuff I tend to just charityshop it. (Having said that, I may rethink...).

In Aus I was working-from-home a lot so spent a lot of time in running shorts (it was hot!). Also I like skirts. Plus rooftop washing-lines & Sydney summer = reliable same-day (same-morning, even) wash-&-dry. It was actually really nice not to have so many damn clothes, although I did get a bit bored of them by the end.

Fair enough.

Try niceboots or gothfashion for the more alternative ones, they're a lot less hassle than ebay. Also thriftstoreuk, which is a bit of hassle but still not quite as much, i don't think.

Oh gosh, it would definitely be lengthened. I would be inclined to do the top bits first - perhaps picking up and knitting the collar, though I do like the way it looks there - then once that is together, picking up and knitting the 'sash' and then lengthening accordingly. I don't see why that wouldn't work (wibbles notwithstanding about matching fronts/backs perfectly). I could never wear a jumper that short, it's just, er, well, not for anyone me :)

that sounds like a good approach! Ah, go for it :)
