General summary: For the Seoul coven, life isn't that hard. With six members, and only two of them being newborns, hunting is kids' game, and the chances of getting caught are almost nonexisting. But when Sehun, the youngest vampire among them, accidentally transforms Tao (a soon-to-be shapeshifter from the Mandarin pack) into one of them, things aren't all that easy for them anymore, nor they are for the pack itself. Will their bonds be stronger than their nature? Or will their instincts lead them to mayhem?
Chapter summary: Tao is starting to get used to his new life. Much to his suprise, he's offered an alternative.

"But,” Jongin continues, “if you want to skip one layer, Joonmyeon has told me about two covens, in Denali and Forks, that live off animals.”

This is gross.

As he sits on the floor of his room, back against the wall and legs folded, Tao sips on a bag from the blood bank. He thinks it’s altogether gross, the whole situation is. But the bit that grosses him out the most is the fact that he doesn’t find it all that gross.

“Knock knock~”

Jongin’s been doing that for a few days. The first time, Tao accidentally kicked him on the jaw. “…Sorry, a reflex,” he had said, even though he hadn’t regretted it much. Jongin was strange. He had no respect for personal space whatsoever, and Tao wasn’t really feeling like making friends. Not there. Not then.

“The point of going knock knock is asking for permission to come in, you know. It doesn’t make sense when you’re already inside.” Tao throws the empty bag into the garbage bin under his desk before wrapping his arms around his knees.

Jongin scoffs. “It’s not like you’re going to say no anyway, am I right?” he shoots, sitting next to Tao. Right next to him. He moves away a little, trying Jongin not to notice. “You’re gonna have to go hunting with us at some point.”

“No I will not,” states Tao with a grimace. “You can’t make me.”

“Of course I can’t, but you need to. Those bags are for emergencies, like quarterings and stuff. Joonmyeon is only letting you have them because you seem particularly bland.” Jongin crosses his arms and looks at Tao, all smug and conceited. Those words, Tao has learnt, apply perfectly to Jongin.

“The worst part of all of this,” replies Tao, “is knowing that I can’t punch your face and have you feel it.” He shakes his head. “I’m not bland. It’s just wrong. People aren’t food.” He doesn’t know how’s he’s going to survive, but he hopes it won’t involve murder.

Jongin doesn’t seem phazed. He shrugs. “I don’t know, man. Animals are food for humans, humans are food for us. Kind of makes sense to me. Plus, we don’t feed on, I don’t know, sweet old ladies and small children. We’re careful on that.” Tao stares him down. “You don’t count, Sehun is an idiot and he didn’t wait for us. He’s still new at this.”

“What a great luck I have.”

But,” Jongin continues, “if you want to skip one layer, Joonmyeon has told me about two covens, in Denali and Forks, that live off animals.”

“…Oh.” Tao thinks for a second. “Really? Is that posible?”

Jongin nods. “Apparently so. Human blood tastes better, but they both have the same properties.”

Tao didn’t know that. He wonders if it’s common knowledge. “They why don’t you all?”

“Why would we?” Jongin counters. “Most of us don’t have a problem with who we are. Those covens are hella weird. One of the dudes in Forks had a daughter.”

Tao’s jaw falls open. “You’re fucking with me right now.”

“I shit you not.” Jongin leans into Tao, as if he was telling him a secret. When he opens his mouth to speak again, they hear steps approaching, and seconds later, Joonmyeon is at the door.

“For real,” he confirms, a ghost smile on his face. “I saw her once.”

Tao feels as if he’s just been told the sky is actually green: his whole life is a lie. “But how…?”

“The mother was human. They had to transform her right after giving birth or else she would have died. The baby broke her spine.” Joonmyeon shrugs. “She caused this huge trouble a few years ago. Vulturi involved. Not pretty. She’s currently
dating her mom’s best friend. He’s one of you.”

“WHAT.” Tao’s eyes go round. “I thought that was a myth!”

“Yeah, well,” Joonmyeon strodes to the bed and sits on the edge. “Most myths are based off true stories. But yeah, that’s what I was coming to say. If you think you aren’t ready for city hunting, there’s a forest near- no, don’t look at me like that. Not yours. Of course not your forest. A different one, towards the south. Chanyeol offered to go with you. I know this was never what you wanted, but you would have gone hunting in the forest anyway, right? This is as much as I can give you… I’m sorry it’s something so small.”

Tao has been working hard to not hate these people. He’s doing a pretty good job with Jongin, Chanyeol and Joonmyeon, though Sehun is a different story. They haven’t crossed paths since the moment Tao recognized her, and that’s fine with him. Baekhyun and Kyungsoo aren’t much of a problem. He barely sees them anyway. Baekhyun is usually hovering around Chanyeol, not being much of a trouble, whereas Kyungsoo does… whatever he does, by himself. He seems like kind of a loner, even though Tao can tell he likes Jongin a lot, maybe even more than Jongin likes Kyungsoo. He doesn’t know whether Jongin is or not aware, but he won’t be the one to tell him.

“Chanyeol is nice. Yes. Thank you.” Tao nods, and Joonmyeon smiles at him before leaving.

“You see,” starts Jongin, “it could have been worse. At least you are here from the start.”

Tao looks at him. “What do you mean?”

Jongin doesn’t look back. He opts for staring at some invisible spot on the opposite wall. “None of us woke up in that room. They were allies, abandoned houses. Places like that. Most of the things we taught you and explained to you we had to learn by ourselves.” He looks at Tao. “You know, you couldn’t expect much from us. We did what we could.”

“What did you do?” Tao knows it’s probably not polite to ask, but he has never seen Jongin so serious. He isn’t sure he likes it.

The older scoffs. “Clandestine fights. I’m not proud, but I needed the money.”

Tao feels sorry. Jongin might be annoying, but he’s sweet. He can’t picture him in a place like that. “With humans?”

“Eh.” Jongin stretches his legs in front of him. “Sometimes. There were other vampires in disguise. I did well when it cames to humans, but with older vampires… that didn’t go so well.” Tao watches him as he plays with a wooden bracelet on his right wrist. His voice lowers to barely a whisper. “No one really cared about us before Joonmyeon found us. We aren’t constantly thinking about it or anything, but he gave us everything we have. We know this is not what you had in mind for the rest of your existence, and you had a family you’d like to go back to. But this is an option, too. We fight sometimes, but it never lasts long. We only have each other, right?” Jongin’s gaze wanders around the room. “And of course you aren’t forced to, but we’d like it if you stayed.”

Tao hugs him. It was an everyday thing for his pack, but they don’t do that much here, and Jongin looks taken aback. The pats on Tao’s shoulder are gentle but confused.

“Hey, it’s alright. You won’t have to go through all that.” It’s funny how Jongin thinks he has to confort Tao, when in fact it’s the other way around. Tao let’s him believe that- he doesn’t want to hurt his ego.

“I know. Thank you. I’m sorry I was a bitch to all of you. You know, at first.” When he lets go, he goes back to his original spot. “It was just… I didn’t like it. I still don’t.”

Jongin punches him lightly on the shoulder, playful and mellow. “I know. Sometimes I forget you weren’t an outcast, that you actually have things to miss. But it’s… this is not going to sound right,” he warns, “but it’s kind of as if they had died. Except the other way around. You’re just gonna have to get used to it.”

It isn’t so easy when the voices won’t get out of his head. “Can I tell you something? Without you telling anyone else? Like… a secret?”

Jongin’s face lights up. “I love secrets! Watching them explode on everybody’s faces while you’ve known all along is so fun. Yes, you can tell me a secret.”

Tao frowns. “I won’t tell you anything if you’re going to be a kid about it.”

“Ah, come on. You know you want to tell me. Speak.” Jongin’s elbow poked Tao’s kidney.  The truth is, even if he doesn’t want to tell anybody -it feels too personal and intimate to break the silence-, he might go crazy if he keeps it all inside. And so he speaks.

“What would you think,” he starts, “if I told you sometimes I hear… stuff?”

Jongin’s expression is blank as ever. “What kind of stuff? Like, other people’s voices stuff?”

“Maybe?”

A silence follows. Tao stares at Jongin. Jongin stares at Tao.

Jongin breaks it. “What was I thinking just now?”

Tao stares still. “How could I know, you idiot?”

“Well,” Jongin declares, “you’re not a mind reader.”

“I didn’t think I was, I would have noticed. I know these voices.” Tao stands up and sits on the bed. He needs a bit of a distance.

Jongin’s eyes narrow. “The pack can communicate by means of telepathy, right?” Tao nods. “And you hadn’t gone through your first phase change yet?” Tao shakes his head. “So you couldn’t communicate with them.”

“No, not in the way they could among themselves,” Tao explains, “but I could sense them in a way? I could tell when they were close and their general emotions. Our Alpha said it was because we have always been really close and my phase change was approaching.” He wishes he hadn’t sounded so sad towards the end.

“It’s their voices, right?” Jongin comes to sit with him. Tao lets him. He lays down. “I’ll take that as a yes. Then, it’s probably your special ability. It happens sometimes. They develop based on skills we had in our previous lives. For example,” Jongin exposes, “Chanyeol can tell when someone is lying. That’s because he was very intuitive as a human.”

Tao closes his eyes. Of course, out of all of the cool gifts he could have had, he gets the one that will do nothing for him except remind him of everything he could never have again. Of course. That’s just his life. “I hear my name sometimes. Like they are calling me. I think they are looking for me.”

“Can you reply?” Jongin rubs Tao’s shoulder, small and soft little circles that make him feel a bit less lonely.

“I don’t know. I haven’t tried.”

“You don’t want them to find you.” It is not a question.

“No,” replies Tao anyway. “I don’t.”

***
Joystick on his hand, Tao spends the night killing aliens and racing oddly shaped cars while hearing stories from Jongin. In the months he’s been with the coven, he made sure he knew the majority of the most relevant anecdotes since Chanyeol joined Joonmyeon and Kyungsoo -everything from before that was just Kyungsoo and Joonmyeon, and that wasn’t half as funny.

“So when I get here, right?, the first window from the right is broken, Baekhyun is wearing a skirt and Chanyeol is wrapped in the bedsheets and Kyungsoo is yelling at them, and Joonmyeon just walks out like no, bitch, I ain’t gonna get involved in this.”

Tao gets killed twice in the course of the story, and by the time Chanyeol comes in and sits next to him he’s laying on the floor in the middle of the room, trying to recover from the laughter fit and still giggling.

“For your information,” Chanyeol informs, giving Tao’s thigh a faint slap, “I was not wrapped in the bedsheets, they were the courtains.” Tao starts laughing all over again. When he finally calms down -kind of-, Chanyeol offers: “In any case, new kid; wanna go for a hunt?”
