live report: 9goats blackout / deathgaze @ Nagoya ell. FITS ALL, 6/22

Jun 24, 2009 19:58

This was a good gig, but I think it was overshadowed by embarrassing and annoying occurrences. It was a 9GOATS sponsored show (the name was something weird like Hamelin in the midland). harmlessbondage brought me delicious Krispy Kreme donuts from Tokyo (♥!). There were two really big boxes-- one for me, one for the bands.

So as we were going up the stairs into the venue, we were doing... what else, trashing lynch., haha. So when the venue staff asks who was my meate band, I unthinkingly said "lynch." The dude was like, "uhh, what?" I actually repeated this like twice stupidly before Jazz pointed out my utter moronicity. D: To make it worse, the guy wouldn't let us bring in the donuts since they don't allow food. We explained one box was for the band, but then he tried to take MY box too! Eventually we had to check the box in like it was a coat, hahaha. Uggghh, mortifying!

DEATHGAZE played first.

Setlist
Japanese Meliorism
-1
Evoke the world
unchain wing
goodbye my earth
死桜 (shinizakura)
forsaken
amends
paranoid parade
fuck me
abyss
genocide and mass murder

We were standing in the back but still had good fun. Ai is blond (I swear he wasn't last time I saw them... which was a million years ago, anyway). Naoto was sadly absent, but the new guy is proficient... he's this super scrawny guy named Takaki. He's just support for now, not a full member as I understand.

The first few songs from the new album are so awesome. I love "-1". That is one thunderous and badass song. The other two highlights were oddly, the two lightest songs, "forsaken" and "amends". They were really beautiful. The new album songs really showcase Naoki's skill on the drums. He was a machine! I think Ai's gotten better at singing, too. But he and the band still need to learn to move around more. The oldest song they played was unfortunately off of the "Genocide" album. I was hoping so hard for "dies irae" (it's still one of their best songs ever).

Ai has not gotten better at MCs though. He still bumbles his way through them, lol. He announced the new album, but the tracklist is already online and it's all rerecordings. Boo! How many versions of their old songs do we need??? They're doing a one-man Toumeihan tour in support of it in September though.

So after DEATHGAZE left, the venue put on PJ Harvey's "White Chalk" album as background music. Yaaay. Also, Yusuke from lynch. was hovering in the back corner furtively, trying to look nonchalant and COMPLETELY failing. I've never seen anybody look more self-conscious. He got a drink and we were being total creepy stalkers and trailing him with our eyes. Hahaha. I wonder if he was there for DEATHGAZE or 9GOATS (or both?).

9GOATS played second.

Set list
落日 (rakujitsu)
SALOME
夜想 (yasou)
red shoes
Sleeping Beauty
float
690min
headache
in the rain
天使 (tenshi)

Encore:
heaven

Ryo looked like he was stealing Loki from Sugar's old look... tight black clothing and that sort of sideways part hairdo, where all these unnatural curls spill off his head. The band still needs to move more... nobody but Ryo really did. Also 9GOATS' audience is sadly boring. They barely do ANYTHING.

I don't think I noticed last time I saw them, but they have a live keyboardist and that always makes me happy. If you're going to use a lot of keyboard/synth, you should have a live performer for those sounds.

They sounded a lot more put together this time. I found myself zoning out though, just because they were so static (audience too). I liked the livelier songs a lot more for that reason, like "float". The encore felt really long too... like 2 different songs!

Then we met up with notafanboy and had omeletty good times. Unfortunately, when we headed to the trains around 11pm, to my horror the trains home were delayed 1.5+ hours thanks to the summer rains. The stupid part was, it was neither raining in Toyohashi nor Nagoya, but something had gone wonky at Kisogawa Station. I was pretty damned pissed off. Finally I hopped on a local train to Toyohashi... it's like a 1:45 hour ride by local! But I wasn't going to take a chance and miss possibly my only ride home. I learned my lesson from last summer, the day of the Opeth gig (where I got stranded in Nagoya thanks to the torrential rains).

I finally got home at 1:30am. X_X
