a thought i've had for awhile:
so we humans have five senses, yes? and sensory organs that correspond these particular senses, yes? and evolution has seen fit to give us these sensory organs in order for us to survive and function on earth, yes?
assuming this, let's think about 'extra-terrestrials'. ie, living forms on other planets. these planets could have entirely different conditions, and assuming these extra-terrestrial life forms also experienced evolution, they would evolve in order for them to function in their habitat (and for the sake of making my point i will assume this habitat is entirely different from ours). and this habitat being entirely different than ours, perhaps they would evolve with different entirely different sensory organs from ours, enabling them to survive in their particular environment.
which brings me to my main point. are senses limited only by sensory organs? what i mean by this is, we know that there is sound because we have ears, we know that there is odour because we have a nose, but is it possible there are other senses we don't know about/can't experience, purely because we haven't developed the appropriate sensory organs?
and if we did come in contact with these supposed (i must stress this supposed, because all of this is assumption) extra terrestrials, would communication even be possible? it could be like trying to talk to deaf person, or sign to a blind person. or perhaps they could introduce us to other senses, and we them.
anyway, this is all a bit sensational. feel free to disagree.
