Lyndon Johnson

Just finished the Doris Kerns bio on this man. I thought if I knew a little more about him, I might not despise him quite as much as I do. Wrong. Now I understand a lot of the motivation that drove him to take the actions that made me despise him. The only bright spot I can see is that we would have been in a panic had we known what a delusional nutcase he was at the time.
The really scary part of all this is that the Bush Whitehouse seems to be operating much the same as the Johnson Whitehouse during the worst part of the Vietman War. Things kept from the president because it would be too distressing. Numbers inflated or deflated to suit a preconcieved idea of how the war was progressing. Failure to tell Congress the cost of the war (otherwise known as lying). Secret deals with others to acheive devious goals. Paranoia. Delusional. Sound familiar?
