Dear Alexey,
The 2006 Canadian seal hunt has ended. But our fight to stop it is far from over.
This past March you took action by contacting Canadian Prime Minister Harper, urging him to oppose the annual seal hunt. In the months since the hunt began, Humane Society International, the global arm of The Humane Society of the United States, has continued to work toward ending the seal hunt forever.
Today we'd like give you another important opportunity to help us end the largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals on the planet. Take a moment to sign the pledge to boycott Canadian seafood. Once you've signed, we'll let you know how to make the right choice when purchasing seafood.
This year, 336,000 seals were clubbed or shot to death -- many of them babies as young as 12 days old -- and some were skinned while still conscious and able to feel pain.
Humane Society International is on the front lines every year in Canada, fighting to halt this atrocity. You can help with your simple pledge to keep the pressure on the Canadian government and on the fishing industry that profits from the slaughter of the seals.
Sign the pledge to boycott Canadian seafood.
Seal hunting is an off-season activity conducted by fishermen from Canada's east coast. They earn, on average, a small fraction of their incomes from seal hunting -- the rest comes from commercial fisheries. Canada takes in nearly $3 billion annually from seafood exports to the United States alone. The connection between the commercial fishing industry and the seal hunt in Canada gives consumers all over the world the power to end the vicious slaughter of seals.
Pass the pledge to friends.
Canada is sensitive to world opinion, and its fishing industry is vulnerable to the choice of hundreds of thousands of people to refuse to buy Canadian seafood. Each and every person who signs the pledge will increase the pressure on Canada. Click here to ask your friends and family to sign the pledge.
After you've signed the pledge and helped spread the word, you can stay in touch with our ongoing efforts to end the seal hunt at www.ProtectSeals.org.
It's truly painful to think about this awful abuse, but your involvement and action today are critical to ending it. Thank you for joining us in our fight to abolish the cruel seal hunt forever.
Sincerely,
Andrew Rowan
