I got back from NYC today. I did not think that I would have gotten so much out of this trip, but it was amazing. I did get to see the tourist-y sites in Manhattan but walking around the Bronx was the best experience ever. There were 16 people total from Canisius that volunteered at the Mercy Center in South Bronx. We ran a week long winter camp for grades K thru 8. It was actually fun and it was great to see the kids remembering my name and even kids who were not in the camp knew my name, just through word of mouth. The guys lived in a Franciscan Friary deeper into the Bronx, which was about an hour commute on the bus and subway to Mercy Center each day. I thought it would have been simple living like in Jamaica, but it was no where near that. I had a huge bed and unlimited supply of food and beer, with tv and internet. Not too shabby. It got a little cold in the city and stupid me packed too light, did not bring a coat...so I bought a 4XL camo bubble jacket. Yes, that's X-X-X-X Large. I will post pictures later when I get them from people. I had a blast on this trip and I am thinking of going next year and maybe even this summer, if at all possible.
