A New Relationship (with my home)

Ben mentioned tonight that this new home is like a good relationship. It feels loving, inviting and, best of all, challenges us to be better stewards - more intentional about our environment and the things that are in it. It's the sort of place that inspires - creativity, organization, relaxation, etc. I have lost track of the number of times we have referred to the house, or our behavior in it, as "civilized". (Our first friend who visited lovingly referred to it as our "country estate").

It has been such a luxury to be so intentional about this place - creating a space for everything that stays in the house and allowing ourselves to let go of the things we do not need or do not fit. And creating a home and a space that really fits our ideals - creating less waste, having spaces for art and music, having room to cook and preserve foods, etc.

Today the piano came. And everything just seemed to fit. I listened to Ben play while I made tea and started dinner and it reminded me of the music that filled The Manor.

And I am writing this on my computer in the evening (the internet man came today too). It's been a bit odd being out of the social networking loop for the last two weeks - a good reminder to myself, however, to stay connected in other ways. I have been randomly calling people whenever I have felt disconnected and it has been really great - catching up with people I haven't seen in far too long, making plans to visit and share meals, etc.

Now if only I could come up with a name for this humble abode. I never was one to name homes before The Manor but I so liked that name for that house that I am quite inclined to adopt some sort of name for this home (but perhaps a bit less tongue-in-cheek this time). I'm sure something will stick soon.
