He had thought to turn his face from magic ever afterward, its sharp notes abrading his skin and his mind in a constant torment. He went out of his way to avoid even Rosa, unwilling to sully his joy in her presence with his loathing for power, and withdrew to the mountain of trials to avoid the problem.
He avoided it successfully for two years. Yet, when Rydia climbed the mountain and faced him with arms akimbo and the wind snapping around her, he felt the bright clean tang of her magic, and felt as though it scoured him clean.
